Job summary
The post holder will be a member of a team of 19wte Consultant Body Radiologists within a department of 48 wte Consultant Radiologists. At UHNM there are currently four consultant radiologists with an interest in cardiothoracic imaging and one with a specialist interest in lymphoma, as well as a team of Advanced Practitioner Chest Reporting Radiographers and Consultant Radiographers. The post holder will contribute to the provision of a first class service supporting 10 respiratory physicians, 4 onco-haematologists, 6 cardiothoracic surgeons, 16 cardiologists and the clinical and medical oncologists, from UHNM and Leighton Hospitals.
The body radiologists provide a full on-call service, currently on a 1 in 19 weekdays and 1 in 10 Saturdays or Sundays, with SpRs providing the first level of cover. Separate on-call cover is provided by neuroradiology and vascular radiology colleagues.
We will not be extending the 12 months contract if the prospective candidate has not submitted an application for CESR and the application was not active with the GMC at the 12 months term end.
Main duties of the job
There is a strong cardiac imaging service with over 2,500 cardiac MR scans performed per year (on Siemens 1.5T and 3T scanners with acceleration software) and a rapidly expanding Cardiac CT service (using Siemens 256 DRIVE scanner) with approximately 3000 cardiac CT scans performed annually. UHNM is one of the top five largest cardiothoracic surgery centres in the UK (with over 1500 surgical procedures per year) and is in the top 3 busiest Regional Major Trauma Centres in the UK and is one of the busiest level 1; both services requiring significant cardiothoracic radiology input. UHNM is also a pilot site for the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme.
The radiologists provide a full on-call service, currently 1 in 19 weekdays and 1 in 10 Saturdays or Sundays.
Depending upon speciality interest the post holder may be required to contribute to the Body Interventional service.
At UHNM the cross sectional radiologists work closely with colleagues through cancer MDTs and joint clinico-radiological conferences. The successful applicant will share responsibilities covering elements of Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging on a rota sharing MDT cover and attendance at the Respiratory Meeting. Other MDTs and clinico-radiological meetings would be according to further sub-specialty interests.

The Imaging Services are based on a strong ethos of Quality assurance, Audit, Evidence and Research. Successful applicants would be expected to actively engage in Governance and Audit and specifically contribute to the Department's on-going QSI accreditation. UHNM is a research active organisation. There is a large number of active oncology trials, many of which require radiology support. The Imaging Department is also building up a portfolio of imaging-based research aligning to the Trust priority to become a major clinical research centre and developing a research interest will be actively encouraged.
