Job summary
The post holder will be a member of a team of 19 WTE Consultant Body Radiologists within a department of 48 WTE Consultant Radiologists. At UHNM there are currently 4 consultant radiologists with an interest in cardiothoracic imaging, as well as a team of Advanced Practitioner Chest Reporting Radiographers and Consultant Radiographers. The post holder will contribute to the provision of a first-class service supporting 10 respiratory physicians, 4 onco-haematologists, 6 cardiothoracic surgeons, 16 cardiologists and the clinical and medical oncologists, from UHNM and Leighton Hospitals.
UHNM has the largest lung cancer cohort in the West Midlands, has a large ILD service and hosts the Regional ILD MDT.
The postholder will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality radiology service within a busy imaging department providing both general and specialist services in diagnostics and interventional imaging which performs more than 600,000 Imaging examinations and procedures per year.
UHNM is one of the top five largest cardiothoracic surgery centres in the UK (with over 1500 surgical procedures per year) and is in the top 3 busiest Regional Major Trauma Centres in the UK and is one of the busiest Level 1 trauma centres; both services requiring significant cardiothoracic radiology input. UHNM is also a pilot site for the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme.
Main duties of the job
At UHNM the cross sectional radiologists work closely with their colleagues through cancer MDTs and joint clinico-radiological conferences. The successful applicant will share responsibilities covering elements of Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging on a rota sharing MDT cover on a Monday and attendance at the Respiratory Meeting on a Friday. Other MDTs and clinic-radiological meetings would be according to further sub-specialty interests.
There are regular CT guided intervention lists, supported by dedicated nursing staff. We perform approximately 400 CT guided lung biopsies per year and the post-holder would be expected to contribute to this service.
The Body Radiologists provide a full on-call service, currently on a 1 in 19 weekdays and 1 in 10 Saturday or Sunday rota, with SpRs providing the first level of cover. Separate on-call cover is provided by neuroradiology and Vascular Radiology colleagues.

The Imaging Services are based on a strong ethos of Quality assurance, Audit, Evidence and Research. Successful applicants would be expected to actively engage in Governance and Audit and specifically contribute to the Department's on-going QSI accreditation. UHNM is a research active organisation. There is a large number of active oncology trials, many of which require radiology support. The Imaging Department is also building up a portfolio of imaging-based research aligning to the Trust priority to become a major clinical research centre and developing a research interest will be actively encouraged.
