An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) based at the Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH) at the University Hospital North Midlands (UHNM).
We are looking to recruit Band 4 Registered Nursing Associates to join our nursing team in NICU.
The NICU is a state of the art Level 3 Unit (providing the highest levels of care) and is part of the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (WMNODN). The Unit is a modern, purpose built facility, providing the most up to date technology, enabling us to support the sickest of babies.
The Unit has 6 Level 1 Intensive Care cots, 6 Level 2 High Dependency cots and 14 Level 3 Special Care cots. In addition there is a co-located 10 bedded Transitional Care Unit which enables mothers and babies, who meet the TCU criteria, to be cared for together in one area.
This is a developing Unit and we are aiming to achieve nurse staffing levels towards British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) standards. As such we are now looking for enthusiastic, qualified, Band 4 Nursing Associates who are looking for career progression and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to join an already well-established team.
Main duties of the job
The Nursing Associate will be responsible for delivering high quality, patient centered, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
The Nursing Associate will be an accountable professional who will carry out specific clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction of a registered nurse. With the ability to work without direct supervision, delivering care independently in line with the individual's defined plan of care, within the parameters of practice of the Nursing Associate role, accessing clinical and care advice when needed.
The post holder will demonstrate a level of underpinning knowledge to practice and educated to foundation degree level. The post holder will support the registered nurses, medical staff and allied health professionals within the clinical environment. The role is flexible and adaptable to the changing needs of the care setting, and it is expected that the responsibilities will be developed, and be agreed as services evolve.

The post holder will be expected to:
- Take part in the appraisal process each year, with the first appraisal taking place within the first 6 months from appointment
- Develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to their role whilst working in a clinical area delivering family integrated care.
- Deliver and monitor holistic, safe, effective and compassionate care to a designated group of patients and their families, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, without direct supervision, in line with an agreed plan of care, within the parameters of practice of the Nursing Associate role, accessing clinical and care advice when needed.
- Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS and Trust Values.
- Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering high quality care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient.
- Support the Registered Nurse in the contribution to on-going assessment and care planning for patients, recognising when it is necessary referral for reassessments.
- Monitor the condition and health needs of patients on a continual basis in partnership with MDT colleagues, families and carers, referring appropriately when necessary.
- Actively contribute to an effective learning and teaching environment, and support others in their learning.
- Actively understand all elements of the nursing process and be able to assist the registered nurse in the on-going assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care, by establishing their needs and incorporating these into care planning and delivery.
- Recognise, report and escalate, where required, any concerns, situations, behaviours and errors that could result in poor care outcomes.
- Perform and record clinical observations including blood pressure, temperature, respirations, pulse.
- Undertake clinical tasks including cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs.
- Administer oral medications , according to NMC standards of proficiency and UHNM Safe Medicines Policy.
- Accurately record nutritional and fluid intake.
- Ensure the privacy, dignity and safety of individuals is maintained at all times.
- Recognise changing priorities seeking advice and guidance from the Registered Nurse or other registered care professionals as appropriate.
- Act independently and in partnership, when required, to ensure that the rights of individuals are not overlooked or compromised.
- Recognise and resolve conflicts in a positive manner with families.
- Recognise issues relating to safeguarding vulnerable children and adults and report any problems or raise concerns to the appropriate registered care professionals.
- Engage in the assessment of and contribute to the management of risk across several areas within the environment where care is being administered.
- Implement appropriate action to meet the specific physical, emotional and psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
- Deliver complex care as prescribed by the Registered Nurse.
- Participate in the coaching/teaching individuals/carers/other staff.
- Participate in the implementation and monitoring of clinical standards and outcomes.
- Engage in reflective practice including management of self and reflection on own reactions, asking questions and reflecting on answers given.
- Demonstrate good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures.
