Job summary

You will be part of a highly skilled team assisting in delivering a professional information service to the Trust in order to meet the requirements of CQC, NHS England & Improvement and any other performance management and commissioning organisations, as well as the Trust's own internal information and performance requirements.

The department has a vacancy for a Senior Cancer Information Analyst.

The Senior Cancer Information Analyst post will primarily support the Cancer Data & Performance Manager in the management of Cancer Waiting Times data and the timely reporting in line with national and local requirements. This post will also provide data as required to support the clinical and operational teams with service improvement plans relating to cancer pathways. The post may also be asked to provide support to the Information Department to cover some non-cancer services.

You will require experience in the use of SQL and MS Office software and you must also have a proven ability to understand and analyse data and to identify trends and variances on your own initiative. Knowledge of Power BI would also be advantageous. An ability to clearly present and communicate the results of analysis is essential.

Main duties of the job

As part of a highly skilled team the Senior Cancer Information Analyst will assist in delivering a highly professional information service to the Trust in order to meet the requirements of the Trust's Cancer Services team as well NHS England, NHS Improvement, Performance Management organisations and the Trust's own internal information and performance requirements for the Trust's other Divisional areas.

It will also provide data as required to support the clinical and operational teams with service improvement plans relating to cancer pathways.

To support members of the Cancer Services team as required, meeting with them regularly to ensure all data recording is accurate, this will include regular audits of Cancer Waiting Times data and information.

This post will also provide some support to other Trust wide projects and will be expected to provide in depth analytical support to the Trust's operational teams to assist them in meeting national and local targets and other reporting requirements.

Job responsibilities

Ensure that internal reporting requirements are met by updating and disseminating regular reports related to cancer services.

Support the Cancer Data & Performance Manager in providing an ad-hoc information service to support internal and external stakeholders, including the preparation of responses to freedom of information requests, using data from the Somerset Cancer Register and other Trust information systems.

Provide support for external data submissions, including Cancer Waiting Times, the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset and clinical audits.

Conduct validation of external data submissions to ensure that information on Trust performance and cancer pathways is accurately reported.

Support the provision of breach analysis information to inform patient RCA / Harm Analysis, pathway discussion and service improvement.

To support the divisions with Business Development projects and to work with a range of other Trust services and key stakeholders within various departments / services.

To link and interpret data so that business intelligence is provided to support analysis of service demand and service development.

To extract and analyse data from the various patient based systems within the Trust in order to coordinate the production of mandatory, management, operational and ad-hoc reports, ensuring local and national deadlines are met and information is of the highest quality. The post holder must therefore be highly numerate and highly skilled in the use of the Microsoft analytical tools and other analytical software used by the Trust, for example Power BI, and knowledge of programming in SQL is essential.

In conjunction with the Cancer Data & Performance Manager work closely with the MDT Facilitators team and cancer clinicians to improve the quality of both clinical and administrative data entry onto the Somerset Cancer Register.

Carry out regular data audits to ensure the completeness and accuracy of data recorded within the Somerset Cancer Register.

To share in the responsibility of ensuring good practice in the use of the Trusts information systems to protect the high standard of data quality. Where necessary produce accuracy and validation check reports for the Trusts Data Quality Lead. Act in an advisory capacity to other staff members on definitional issues regarding the NHS Data Dictionary. It is therefore essential the post holder keeps up to date with data recording, reporting and submission changes, especially relating to Cancer Waiting Times and other cancer datasets.

Maintain the Corporate and Divisional Performance Dashboards, by coordinating the collection and collation of key performance indicator data and reviewing these measures to ensure figures are as expected and data quality is checked. Update dashboards to meet organisational requirements.

To take responsibility for disseminating to the appropriate parties any NHS England and Improvement changes in guidance, definition, collection and reporting of patient information, working with other information staff and system users on new information requirements to ensure that new procedures and working practices are implemented. Ensuring that any external reporting reflects changes in definition and requirements.

To work closely with commissioners and other agencies to ensure that they have access to high quality Trust and divisional performance/activity information.

To ensure written procedures are in place for all reporting for which the Information Department has responsibility. These procedures will come under the scrutiny of both internal and external auditors and must be detailed, kept up to date and presented in an easily understood format.

Within the remit of Information Governance, ensure all patient information is produced in an anonymised/pseudonymised format and adhere to the guidelines of the Caldicott Guardian by only producing information on a need to know basis. Work within the rules of Data Protection.

To assist colleagues in the use of systems and information required to monitor the Trust's performance / activity. Develop and maintain databases and system tools to enable this to happen.

To train members of staff in the use of new systems and databases that may be implemented as part of ongoing changes to information requirements both nationally and locally.

To participate in the implementation of new information systems: advising on reporting requirements, testing the software before implementation and assessing the system for the Trusts needs as required. Coordinate the testing of all future software relative to changes in NHS definitions, reporting and CDS production.

Ensure data submissions to SDCS, SUS, Commissioners and other agencies are made in accordance with national and locally agreed protocols and timetables.

Any other duties requested by the Associate Director of Information & Performance and the Divisional Business Information Manager.

To lead and manage the information team staff as required, including workload, priority setting and personal development plan.
