Job summary

Due to retirement of our current post holder we are excited to advertise the fantastic opportunity for an experienced Ophthalmology nurse practitioner with a willingness and drive to develop the nursing team. We are looking for someone to share our passion for patient centred care, someone who is willing to lead a team and work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide innovative, efficient, joined up care to our patients. We are in search of a candidate who can offer added value to our existing team. The successful candidate will be someone who can support and lead the nursing team and who will continue to drive and provide an excellent patient experience, along with enthusiasm for personal and professional development. The successful candidate will be pivotal in training, competencies and pathways opportunities to maximise our Ophthalmology service.

This role commits to a clinical workload and the successful candidate will undertake independent clinics. You will be expected to act as an informed resource and role model.

You will lead in the development of robust governance, writing and updating policies and procedures as necessary to maintain continuous service improvement.

Our services operate at Warwick Hospital - Machen Eye Unit and Stratford Hospital and the successful candidate will be expect to work from both units in order to support our teams and clinical requirements.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will display a high profile, accessible and be responsive as a clinical leader with managerial and clinical responsibility for nursing and health care within the ophthalmology speciality throughout South Warwickshire Foundation Trust (SWFT). Consistent and effective display of excellent leadership skills, ensuring that the service delivers high quality patient experience, care and outcomes. The post holder will be able to make informed decisions within the speciality and scope of professional practice, involving the patients and public to ensure agreed standards, targets and objectives are achieved. To work in collaboration with the General Manager/Operational Managers, Consultants, AHPs and Nursing team to ensure that all aspects of the ophthalmology service, the national and local operational and quality targets are met and ensure best practice is achieved, eg waiting times

The post holder will have full clinical responsibility for the overall nursing team within ophthalmology with direct line management of the unit manager and nurse practitioners. The individual will provide clinical and professional leadership for nurses, Health Care Support workers, Bands 1-4, This will involve ensuring safe nurse staffing by appropriate deployment, delegation, co-ordination and supervision of grades of staff in his/her charge. This responsibility includes ensuring all staff work within the competencies appropriate to their professional qualifications and grading. The post holder will provide an environment conducive to the needs of all permanent nursing and care members of staff, meeting their learning and developmental requirements.

The post holder will also hold overall responsibility for managing the electronic staff rota in order to maximise staffing efficiency and minimise the requirement for bank and agency staff, however the unit manager will be managing the rota on a day to day basis.

Duties

Clinical/Managerial

Clinical line management to include the unit manager and nurse practitioners and to liaise with patient liaison services, divisional managers, other lead nurses and matrons, to ensure a high standard of service delivery

Maintain effective relationships with the multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) to ensure continuity of patient care.

Ensures that the duty rota reflects the workload in the department, allocating leave appropriately to ensure service delivery is not compromised

Responsible for the 24/7 co-ordination of clinical nursing resource with day-to-day management of all areas ensuring safe staffing is achieved across the department both at Warwick and Stratford.

Ensure that resources are used in an appropriate and cost effective manner, and ensuring that all appropriate stock.

Organise repair/maintenance of equipment, ensure that stock levels of consumables are adequate and cost effective

Supervise the work of the clinical teams addressing any issues with practice in a timely manner, and keeping the General Manager informed

Communicate effectively to patients and staff providing and receiving highly complex, sensitive or contentious information. Persuasive, motivational, training, negotiation, empathic and re-assurance skills are used and required.

Hold and manage the areas nursing pay and non-pay budget/s and is the authorised signatory for the allocated areas

Contribute to the divisional financial balance, cost improvement and income generation plans

Work collaboratively with the GM, Matron and ACNO for the division to escalate issues and concerns, celebrate achievements and opportunities for staff and service development within nursing, patient safety, and patient experience

Analyse data and provide reports as required in response to Ophthalmology performance eg: roster exceptions, finance, etc

To ensure that national and local audits are completed in a timely manner

Quality/Governance

To participate in the delivery of the clinical governance and risk management agenda of the ophthalmology service and Trust

Adheres to the Trusts procedures for managing incidents; developing, and where appropriate liaising with AHPs and medical staff in order to devise, action plans to address any risk issues and communicating any changes in practice to all staff Investigates and prepares statements as requested to assist in investigations

To develop and maintain effective communication systems with all personnel internal and external to the Trust

To participate in multi-disciplinary clinical audit to ensure standards are continually reviewed and developed.

Work in partnership with the General Manager and other AHP Clinical leads to develop, take forward and evaluate direction, policies and strategies

Responsible for development, implementation and evaluation of projects to improve patient care and service development

Promoting best practice in health, safety and security
