Job summary

Some of the services the Urology department provide are below

  • 2ww Outpatient Service, cancer diagnostics and some first cancer treatments. The department has been using pre-biopsy MRI of prostate (one of the first in the country) and has developed a Transperienal prostate biopsy service led by Mr Kaba and Miss Anderson (in the one-stop prostate clinic).
  • A full LUTS assessment is undertaken by the Urology Clinical Nurse Specialists. The unit is leading in surgical treatments for BPH, including Urolift, REZUM and green light laser prostatectomy. The department was one of the first to introduce Urolift and REZUM procedures and has performed them in high numbers.
  • EndoUrology, including kidney and bladder stone disease treatment and diagnosis and treatment of upper tract TCC. The service has benefitted from the trust acquiring Holmium laser and service contract for Storz flexible ureteroscopes, with onsite technician support. There is a visiting lithotripsy service run by Clinical Nurse Specialists, who also run stone disease follow up clinics.
  • Incontinence and NeuroUrology, including urological input for CERU and support for Continence team. A joint service with colorectal department could be established for provision of sacral neuromodulation for treatment of incontinence in the future. There is a scope for developing videourodynamic service and uro-gynaecology, currently provided by gynaecology department.

Clinical Governance

  • In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met and regularly attend the Trust Committees supporting the clinical governance structure.

  • To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
  • To take on appropriate management responsibilities, and lead in developments appropriate to interests and experience of the new appointee.

  • To provide cover for Consultant colleagues as appropriate and in accordance with local Trust arrangements and Trust Policy.

  • To take responsibility for your own health and safety complying with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures which are in place.
  • To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any hazards are reported and managed appropriately.

About us

Department activities

The Urology department offers regular Departmental meetings, MDT, SMDT, Morbidity & Mortality Meetings and an active audit programme.

SUPPORT SERVICES

Secretarial and Booking support is provided by the Patient Access Team, each Consultant has a named secretary.

Office accommodation will be a desk in a shared office.

Audit

Audit and research is encouraged. We have a monthly M&M meeting where audit projects and updates are presented.

Annual Appraisal and Revalidation

The Trust has the required arrangements in place, as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians, to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and support doctors going through the revalidation process.

Teaching

Regular teaching takes place throughout the week of junior doctors and medical students. The post holder would be expected to contribute to the teaching and to supervise one of the Junior Doctors.

Inpatient / ward cover for Urologists comprises:

  • Operating theatre activity, including dealing with emergencies
  • Endoscopy
  • GP calls (Consultant Connect service) and Advice and Guidance emails
  • Patient related administration
  • Liaising with relatives
  • Junior doctor supervision
  • Undergraduate teaching of Warwick Medical School students
  • CPD

On-call / emergency cover and weekend working

The post holder will be part of the substantive on call rota, the current rota is Monday Thursday or Friday Sunday.
