Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of NHS Locum Consultant General/Benign Upper GI Surgeon at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, for a term of 6 months. This post is to commence as soon as possible, and is pending the appointment of a substantive consultant. The post attracts 10 PAs (additional PAs may be negotiable) and will include an on-call commitment for emergency general surgery (currently 1 in 8).

Main duties of the job

Outpatient clinics take place at both Warwick and Stratford Hospital. They currently include a mix of face to face and telephone appointments. Inpatient surgical care is at Warwick Hospital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, theatre services have been reconfigured to allow elective work to continue safely on site, although most of these restrictions have now been lifted and our pandemic recovery in elective surgery has been recognised as good. Elective Paediatric surgery is done on a dedicated bi-weekly paediatric day.

The bulk of the elective work will be cholecystectomies (including hot gallbladders) and hernia repairs (including laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair). Depending on the skills of the appointee, involvement in anti-reflux surgery may be possible. Diagnostic upper GI endoscopy sessions can also be arranged if appropriate.
