Operating Department Practice is an exciting and rewarding career that involves working with many different patient groups undergoing a variety of anaesthetic and surgical procedures. It's one of the only jobs within the health profession where in the morning you can be helping a woman give birth, lunchtime you can be in A&E, and the afternoon helping a routine operation.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic, motived and caring person to train to become an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).

Main duties of the job

ODP's have expertise in the management and maintenance of a patient safe environment within the operating department. In doing this they utilise highly specialist skills, equipment and materials to deliver a high standard of patient care. As an apprentice working at Warwick Hospital you will learn from experienced theatre practitioners and members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure every patient is treated safely and with dignity and respect they deserve, encompassing our trust values.

Job Purpose

  • To complete a 3-year University led BSc Hons Operating Department Practice Apprenticeship and obtain HCPC registration
  • To develop the skills and knowledge required of an Operating Department Practitioner as listed in the job description
  • To attend the mandatory academic attendance at a designated Higher Education Institute
  • To engage in the mandatory minimum 20% off job learning
  • To engage in the learning, clinical training and portfolio activities, and discussion with allocated mentors and assessors
  • On qualification, there is an expectation that students will work in the registered ODP role within Theatres at SWFT, for a period of 2 years, as written in the Commitment Agreement
  • On receipt of full HCPC registration the now ODP registrant will move onto AfC Band 5 Pay Point 1 in a substantive post.

Clinical and Professional

  • Deliver safe practice by adhering to the HCPC current Code of Practice, and all relevant Local, National and Professional Standards as laid down at all times.
  • Ensure individualised patient care is provided to the highest standards and maintaining efficient flow of patients throughout the operating department by developing planning and organisational skills
  • Liaise with and communicate relevant information to other members of the multidisciplinary team, actively participate in and/ or lead team briefs and the WHO checklist
  • Demonstrate effective and efficient control of both human and material resources
  • Ensure all equipment is well maintained and functioning correctly and report any faults
  • Support patients physically and emotionally throughout the perioperative journey by developing skills for effective communication and empathetic reassurance and develop awareness of patient positioning and pressure area care.

Clinical Governance

  • Practice (under supervision), assessing patients in theatres and associated areas, exercising professional judgement to establish patient centred goals and to accept, plan, initiate, modify, refer or cease treatment within prescribed limits.
  • Change practice to account for new developments, or changing contexts in what constitutes best practice in perioperative care, through effective change management
  • Conduct appropriate diagnostic, monitoring, treatment and therapy procedures safely and effectively
  • Undertake anaesthetic, surgical and post-anaesthesia care interventions including managing airways, cannulation, catheterisation and manual handling/ positioning of patients.
  • Select appropriate techniques and equipment; undertake and record through assessments and investigations
  • Maintain Basic , Intermediate or Advanced life support qualifications where appropriate
  • Use a wide range of clinical skills to provide a safe environment during administration and maintenance of anaesthesia
  • Assist anaesthesia with the use of medical devices and pharmacological means. Safely secure and maintain the patients airway and stability during anaesthesia.
  • Position the patient to optimise surgical access, maintaining patient safety and dignity.
  • Safe preparation of a wide range of specialised equipment and devices
  • Maintain a sterile working area and safely and effectively perform aseptic technique (including scrubbing, gloving and gowning)

  • Selection, preparation and provision of the correct sterile surgical equipment to the surgeon and be accountable for all the surgical instruments, equipment and swabs throughout the procedure.

  • In post-anaesthetic care, observe and monitor the patients vital signs. Monitor airway, breathing and circulation.

  • Working in a hazardous environment with exposure prone procedures, airborne viruses, image intensifiers, x-ray and exposure to hazardous substances such as chemicals, blood, body fluids and tissue etc.
  • Prioritising the demands of the service whilst ensuring we are meeting patients own needs, requirements and expectations
  • Physical, mental and emotional demands of responding speedily and accurately to emergency and unplanned situations and support of patients and possibly their relatives throughout these situations along with ensuring ones own physical and mental wellbeing.
