Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of NHS Locum Consultant General/Colorectal Surgeon at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, for a term of 6 months with a possibility of renewal.

This post is to commence in September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post attracts 10 PAs and will include a 1 in 8 on call commitment for emergency general surgery.

The elective workload includes lower GI endoscopy. The post is based at Warwick Hospital with some clinics held at Stratford upon Avon Hospital if required.

Main duties of the job

This post is a locum consultant post to cover the work of a long term locum colleague who has been appointed to a substantive post.

It is for 6 months initially with a possibility of an extension if required. The timetable includes out- patient clinics in general and colorectal surgery, lower GI endoscopy and elective operating sessions. It also involves a 1 in 8 on call commitment to emergency general surgery.

The elective work for this post is a mix of general surgery to include hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy as well as proctology and other aspects of colorectal surgery, depending on skills and experience of the successful candidate.

The Consultant General Surgical Team at SWFT are a cohesive group of dedicated and friendly surgeons striving for excellence. There is a strong culture of training within the department.

The department provides both elective and emergency surgical services to the people of South Warwickshire. The emergency commitment of this post is through an active part in a 1 in 8 non-resident on-call rota. While on-call, the post-holder will be expected to do a ward round each morning of emergency patients (including Saturday and Sunday) and will have access to a daily NCEPOD theatre.

We have an active Surgical Assessment Unit, and aim to provide ambulatory and outpatient surgical emergency care where possible. On call and elective work is supported by a full complement of junior doctors and a team of ACPs. No elective commitments will be expected during on-call periods.

There is on site specialty support from both Urology and Gynaecology. Vascular Surgery and Major Trauma support are via the regional hub at the University Hospital in Coventry.

Outpatient clinics take place at both Warwick and Stratford Hospital. They currently include a mix of face to face and telephone appointments. Inpatient general surgery care is at Warwick Hospital.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, theatre services have been reconfigured to allow elective work to continue safely on site. Day case theatres are currently used for patients unscreened for COVID-19, housing the NCEPOD and Trauma theatres. Main theatres are currently used for elective screened patients.
