Job summary

The position will involve undertaking the following responsibilities.

Managerial oversight for the QI team members and their roles and responsibilities

Promote patient safety and personalised care, helping support the drive of national programmes within the maternity services

Act as a deputy to the Clinical Governance Midwife

Support in Rapid Reviews, Serious incidences, Datix investigations and Freedom of Information Requests

Attend and present at departmental meeting on governance a QI team work

Act as a lead and run the MDT mandatory training including designing, implementing, organising and running all mandatory face to face, virtual and e-learning whilst monitoring and reporting on compliance

Manage and plan internal and external study leave and yearly Learning Needs Assessment

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the department in maintaining and improving high standards of care and achieving safety throughout the maternity footprint by leading on quality improvement and clinical effectiveness.

To support the maternity service in fostering an environment that is woman centred, and upholds the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.

To work closely with clinical teams to facilitate and foster the clinical governance, risk agenda and continual quality improvement initiatives.

To understand new healthcare related developments ensuring that midwifery practice is evidence based, cost effective and regularly benchmarked against best practice.

Quality Improvement:

Provide strategic oversight to quality improvement projects within the maternity services

Co-ordinate ongoing quality improvement projects and support the launch of new projects within the service

To ensure multi-disciplinary clinical audit is embedded at ward level, ensuring that patient care reflects the Trusts quality strategy

Ensure that audit projects have a SMART action plan which has a monitoring process in place

Produce a quarterly report on audit activity and progress

Report to the maternity management team any information received from other external agencies National Maternity standards

To understand all national initiatives and assist in the implementation in order to influence patient care and service delivery

To be aware of, and support, local research projects as applicable.

Clinical Effectiveness:

To lead on multi-disciplinary training at SWFT, conceptualising and operationalising the training programme

To work collaboratively with the team to implement, deliver and evaluate effective MDT training

To support the midwifery team to map out the educational needs for all levels of staff within the maternity team

Develop and support a team of cascade trainers to support the delivery of training and education

Oversee the completion of the competency package for support staff

Monitor changes to national drivers in relation to maternity education

Be the Trust liaison with higher education institutions

Support and work closely with the educational lead for student midwives from the university

Lead and strategically plan for the preceptorship programme for all band 5 midwives and provide a resource for support for the preceptor programme

Co-ordinate and liaise with ward managers to maintain the training needs analysis

Work with Learning and Development when aspects of the training agenda require co-ordinated input

Co-ordinate the updating of guidelines

Respond to and develop an action plan when gaps in evidence have been identified

Identify any gaps of non-compliance to the maternity guidelines from national standards

Assisting in the updating of current guidelines and the development of new evidence based guidelines

To liaise with department operational managers to ensure lessons learnt from incidents and feedback inform relevant governance processes

To ensure and facilitate the involvement of all stakeholders in the development of the MIS

Lead on planning, developing and delivering the programme of work relating to the MIS throughout the Maternity Service

Involved in evaluation and selection of equipment appropriate for clinical need and be an authorised signatory

Identify any clinical benefits and financial saving opportunities that arise from MIS

Manage MIS user accounts ensuring the correct permissions are given

Liaise with IT department and infrastructure engineer

Prepare draft reports and action plans for trust and local level committees as required

To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the maternity unit to whom staff, patients and their families can turn to for assistance, advice and support

To develop good working relationships with other ward / departments / agencies within and outside the Trust, ensuring that all stakeholders understand, respect and recognise the Trusts philosophy and operational policies

Attend all meetings relevant to the post relating to risk and governance, as an invited attendee or as delegated by the Maternity Governance Lead To maintain effective channels of communication both within and external to the Trust

Assist the Maternity Risk and Governance Lead to investigate complaints, incidents and accidents and assist in their resolution and dissemination of learning outcomes

To monitor and work within allocated resources

To allocate and manage own time effectively, creating a balance between clinical and non-clinical duties working within project timescales

To undertake midwifery cover when required

Ensure robust methods of evidence collection for CQC requirements

Clinical Risk:

Co-ordinate systems and processes to ensure effective risk management strategies; including Datix and investigation co-ordination

Review, investigate, closure and disseminate learning of Datix

Undertake serious investigations as required

Support the coordination of incident management, ensuring that all reports are reviewed in a timely manner and any action required is highlighted and implemented
