South Warwickshire NHS foundation Trust is seeking a committed, dynamic and enthusiastic NHS Locum Urology Consultant to join our friendly and cohesive team.
The NHS Locum Consultant will be supported by three experienced Urology Clinical Nurse Specialists, who provide a 2ww Haematuria service and carry out the majority of flexible cystoscopies in the unit and prostate biopsies in patients not suitable for radical treatment. They are also responsible for LUTS assessments; Lithotripsy and stone disease follow up clinics, andrology and erectile dysfunction treatment and run a dedicated Urology Unit.
Our Urology ward is covered by two junior doctors and the service itself is supported by two interventional Radiologists and a local multidisciplinary meeting with a visiting Oncologist.

The Urology unit at Warwick Hospital is leading in surgical treatments for BPH, including Urolift and green light laser prostatectomy. The department was one of the first to introduce the Urolift procedure and has performed most of them in the region. We are planning to continue to pioneer innovative prostatic procedures in the future with a business case being prepared to start Resum Wave therapy.

There are many development opportunities here at Warwick, which will be dependent on the candidate who applies, such as a transperienal prostate biopsy service, a joint service with the Colorectal department for provision of sacral neuromodulation for treatment of incontinence, a videourodynamic service and uro-gynaecology, and further development of the andrology and erectile dysfunction service.

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and forward-looking urology department at Warwick Hospital. We provide the following services
- 2ww Outpatient Service, cancer diagnostics and some first cancer treatments. The department has been using pre-biopsy MRI of prostate one of the first in the country and has developed a transperienal prostate biopsy service.
- 2ww haematuria service, provided by experienced Clinical Nurse specialists who carry out the majority of flexible cystoscopies in the unit and prostate biopsies in patients not suitable for radical treatment. The rest of prostate biopsies are performed by a uro-radiologist with cognitive targeting of the lesions.
- A full LUTS assessment is undertaken by the urology Clinical Nurse Specialists. The unit is leading in surgical treatments for BPH, including Urolift and green light laser prostatectomy. The department was one of the first to introduce Urolift procedure and performed most of them in the region. We are planning to continue to pioneer innovative prostatic procedures in the future with business case being prepared to start Rezum Wave therapy.
- Endourology, including kidney and bladder stone disease treatment and diagnosis and treatment of upper tract TCC. The service has benefitted from the trust acquiring Holmium laser and service contract for Storz flexible ureteroscopes, with onsite technician support. There is a visiting lithotripsy service run by Clinical Nurse Specialists, who also run stone disease follow up clinics.
- Incontinence and neurourology, including urological input for CERU and support for Continence team. A joint service with colorectal department could be established for provision of sacral neuromodulation for treatment of incontinence in the future. There is a scope for developing videourodynamic service and uro-gynaecology, currently provided by gynaecology department.
- Penoscrotal surgery and testicular cancer
- Andrology and erectile dysfunction treatment currently provided by a Clinical Nurse Specialist, with possibility of further development of service depending on interest of the appointed candidate.
- Inpatient treatment for acute admissions of urological patients and referrals from other specialties in the hospital, supported by General Surgical on call team.
- We are closely linked with Warwick Medical School and opportunity exists in developing teaching/academic commitment.
- We were recently positively assessed by Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) review on organisation of our services, which especially complimented us on our services for benign prostatic hyperplasia and involvement of Nurse Specialists.
