We are looking for an exceptional leader to head up the Communications and Public Affairs function at South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST). You will bring:

  • Past experience in senior communications and engagement leadership, ideally in a healthcare environment.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking with a hands-on approach to delivery, managing proactive and reactive communications needs.
  • Expertise in stakeholder mapping and engagement, focusing on strengthening external relations, enhancing organisational reputation.
  • Strong media relation skills and the ability to manage complex communication issues in high-pressure environments.
  • A collaborative, inclusive leadership style, with a commitment to empowering teams and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • An innovative mindset, comfortable working with traditional and digital platforms to deliver effective, impact-full communications.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of SWAST's communications and engagement approach, setting the tone and corporate style to align with our vision, values, and goals.
  • Oversee all internal and external communications efforts, ensuring clear, consistent messaging that strengthens SWAST's reputation regionally and nationally.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and Executive team, providing expert counsel on media relations, public affairs, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with key external stakeholders, driving strategic partnerships to amplify SWAST's voice in the healthcare system.
  • Champion internal communications, creating meaningful connections across our geographically diverse teams and fostering a culture of inclusivity and transparency.
  • Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing communications and reception team, ensuring they are equipped to drive SWAST's strategic ambitions forward.
  • Ensure continuous evaluation and improvement of communication and engagement outputs, utilising emerging trends to deliver impactful results.
