Job summary

In the role of Emergency Care Assistant no two shifts will ever be the same. You could be attending anything from the birth of a new baby, to a Road Traffic Collision or assisting someone who has fallen over in their home. Operating in a wide range of environments across the South West with the support and assistance of our front-line clinical teams, you could be the person saving and making a difference to people's lives.

No previous medical experience is required to apply, as in this role you will receive high quality clinical and driving training to prepare you for the incidents you will attend. The driving training will provide you with a recognised Emergency Response Advanced Driving qualification.

This role will require you to work across a variety of shifts patterns, with enhancements for unsocial hours under Section 2 of Agenda for Change. This could be the start of your new career within the Ambulance Service with a wide variety of progression opportunities available. This includes pathways to becoming a Paramedic.

We are pleased to confirm that SWAST is now able fund C1 licences for any successful candidates looking to take up a position in any of our Somerset, Wiltshire or Dorset stations.

You will need a full driving licence including the C1 Category to apply for this role for Devon, Cornwall, Bristol and Gloucestershire.

Main duties of the job

To provide a continuous duty of care to patients, both clinically and personally. With the assistance of other front-line clinicians and under the level of training and competency of this role. Ensuring an appropriate level of monitoring and treatment is maintained and continued until the patient is either discharged or transferred to the care of another healthcare professional. Recording patient information, in accordance with Trust procedure, and delivering a clear and detailed handover.

Driving all types of approved ambulance vehicles under normal and Emergency (Blue light) conditions, whilst transporting patients or attending incidents.

Carry out general vehicle checks at the start of and during each shift, to ensure the readiness of the vehicle and communications equipment to respond as required.

This position will require an assessment day rather than an interview. This assessment day will include:

  • Physical assessment
  • Group discussion
  • Group Task -Team building exercise
  • Communication exercise
