We are looking for a highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work in our acute pathway Therapies team, joining OT, Psychology, nursing and key working colleagues. You will be part of an integrated, multi-disciplinary CAMHS team, who are focused on ensuring children and young people, and their families, get the right help at the right time. Offering specialist Speech and Language assessment and intervention to children and young people presenting with co-morbid mental health needs as well as autism and neurodiversity you will be have a important role in shaping the care of young people presenting in the acute pathway and then receiving ongoing care from both the CAMHS key working and locality teams.

Main duties of the job

To work as an Highly Specialist Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with Children and Young People (CYP) who are autistic and/or have a range of other identified neurodevelopmental conditions. The post holder will deliver highly advanced skills and knowledge to provide specialist Speech & Language therapy assessment and interventions to CYP who are receiving care across a range of services but who are at risk of hospital inpatient admission, in crisis or referred to the Dynamic Support Database for CYP.

This is a community-based role that requires frequent travel to various locations throughout the county including areas that may not be accessible by public transportation. Successful candidates will need to demonstrate how they will manage these travel requirements.

Essential

  • A Degree or Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Health Professions Council registered
  • Extensive experience of working with people with Autism/ADHD/neurodevelopmental conditions and Mental Health conditions
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses relevant to children and young people with Autism up to masters degree level, or equivalent

Desirable

  • Experience of working with children and young people who are in crisis.

Skills and Aptitude

Essential

  • Highly skilled in use of standardised assessments and professionally recognised non-standardised assessment tools relevant to this client group
  • Advanced skills in planning and implementing holistic intervention that is CYP centred and recognises the needs of carers and families.

Knowledge and abilities

  • Specialist knowledge of selection and AAC systems and application of SLT assessments and interventions relevant to children and young people with Autism and learning disability, dyspraxia, developmental language disorder.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the impact of autism/learning disability on language and communication.

  • Knowledge of Autism / Learning Disability and Mental Health legislation and current NICE guidance relevant to this client group
