Job summary

To provide specialist respiratory assessment, diagnosis, treatment and care to a range of patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. The post links closely with SGH acute assessment areas, emergency department, respiratory nurses and chest clinics based at SGH and QMH. As well as linking with SWLCCG, GPs, community MDT teams and other partners such as Oxygen providers.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder should provide a high-quality service to all respiratory patients within St Georges Hospital. The respiratory clinical nurse specialist will work as part of the multi-professional team in the:

Provision of out-patient nurse led clinics for respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD, oxygen assessment

Provision of inpatient review of asthma/COPD in-patients

Support development of seamless patients pathways, eg Inpatient to outpatients

Assessment for long term and ambulatory oxygen

Provide on-going support for patients requiring domiciliary Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV)*

Support asthma service and work alongside the severe Asthma MDT to provide care for patients with severe asthma including those requiring biologic therapy*

*There will be an opportunity to undertake these roles within this JD but it would be to deliver care to patients requiring NIV OR Severe Asthma provision rather than staff undertaking both in the same role. In addition, the post holder will be expected to participate in the strategic development of the respiratory service by:

Being recognised as an expert in their field holding additional specialist knowledge and experience

Providing leadership in clinical practice for the professional team and peers and ensuring effective learning experience for students through provision of an educational environment

Working as a competent, autonomous advanced clinical nurse specialist.

Actively disseminating best practice through teaching, publication and conference presentations and participating in nursing research and national working parties

  • oNMC Level 1 or Registered Nurse
  • oDegree (BSc) or equivalent in a health-related subject
  • oAdvanced Clinical assessment skills accredited module or willing to undertake

Desirable

  • oLeadership Training

  • oRelevant Post registration course (e.g. respiratory/critical care/NIV).
  • oNon-Medical Prescriber
  • oTraining in spirometry and FeNo testing
  • oCBG Training with blood gas analysis

  • oMinimum of 3 year's NHS experience relating to acute care or within respiratory setting.
  • oEvidence of NIV competence
  • oBroad range of experience at B5 and B6 level
  • oAbility to work independently and as part of a team.
  • oKnowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of respiratory patients demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning
  • oExperience of managing junior staff members.
  • oExperience of teaching in a clinical setting
  • oExperience of student supervision/ clinical education
