Clinical Physiologist Band 6

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Lung Function and Sleep Unit at St George's Hospital for a skilled and enthusiastic senior respiratory physiologist to help expand the service. As a prestigious teaching hospital we are closely linked to the University and play a role in the teaching of students.

We are a large, but close knit and busy team and are looking for someone who will not only excel professionally but will fit in and thrive in the environment. The successful candidate will need to be an experienced, friendly and highly motivated person with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A commitment to providing a high-quality service is essential.

You will also be expected to play an active role in the education and training of respiratory physiology trainees as well as other healthcare professionals including physiotherapists, nursing staff, medical students and junior doctors. You will also be given the opportunity to develop your leadership skills by line managing and taking a key role in the development of the assistant physiologist and trainee respiratory physiologists in the department. Appropriate support and training will be offered.

A Clinical Physiology BSc or equivalent is required with at significant experience as a Band 5 Clinical Physiologist. ARTP Part 1 and 2 are desirable. The appointee should be RCCP/AHCS registered or working towards registration.

Main duties of the job

As the successful candidate, you will be required to perform a full range of lung function investigations in our adult service. We are currently performing full lung function testing, capillary blood gas sampling, and sleep studies including multichannel, transcutaneous CO2 monitoring and limited polysomnography.

You will need to have an excellent understanding of diagnostic sleep testing, analysis of respiratory sleep studies and CPAP treatment including titration, trouble shooting, advice and maintenance.

You will also be expected to play an active role in the education and training of respiratory physiology trainees as well as other healthcare professionals including physiotherapists, nursing staff, medical students and junior doctors. You will also be given the opportunity to develop your leadership skills by line managing and taking a key role in the development of the assistant physiologist and trainee respiratory physiologists in the department. To perform a full range of sleep studies including home multichannel, polygraphy and CPAP titrations.

To check quality of results produced by junior staff.

To interpret the data generated on all tests and produce reports commenting on any abnormal results and identifying whether they are physiological or due to mechanical or technical error.

Advise patients on the use of CPAP and have a leading role in the development and running of the CPAP clinic.

Have a good knowledge of the lung function and sleep analysing software and Microsoft Office programs.

Assess training and instruct more junior staff in the techniques used within the department.

To perform studies and measurements and give technical advice and support on research projects carried out within the department or in collaboration with other departments/companies/hospitals.

Occasionally set-up in-patients for respiratory sleep studies and CPAP therapy on the wards.

  1. Managerial Responsibilities:

Supervise and train junior staff.

Take operational responsibility for junior staff e.g. return to work, review meetings and appraisals

Undertake teaching on courses developed by department

Be responsible for stock control and ordering

Ensure the calibration, maintenance, minor trouble shooting, quality assurance and infection control of lung function and sleep equipment is maintained. Immediately inform the Consultant Clinical Scientist/Healthcare Scientist Professional Manager of any faulty equipment and withdraw it from patient/clinical use until repair or replacement.

To show initiative in overcoming daily challenges and to be pro-active in improving and developing the department.

  1. Organisational Responsibilities:

Liaise with reception staff to ensure smooth running of the sleep and pulmonary function clinics.

Ensure correct and up to date information is entered onto Trust and departmental databases for the purposes of audit and research.

Take part in audit studies within the department as requested by the Healthcare Scientist Professional Manager and Consultant Clinical Scientist.

Ensure the timely rotation of CPAP equipment through Medical Physics to maintain a minimum level of stock within the department.
