Job summary

This post is based at Croydon University Hospital Clinical Blood Sciences Laboratory (CBS). However, you will be expected to work at any of the SWLP sites as and when required.

You will be required to receive and book-in patient samples, work with laboratory equipment and processes across the blood sciences disciplines (Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion,Central Pathology Reception,COVID / influenza sample testing).

Although previous experience as a biomedical support worker in a clinical laboratory will be an advantage, full training will be provided.

Experience with Beckman Coulter equipment, Remisol and Winpath LIMS will be an advantage, but full training will be provided.

You will be eligible to apply for IBMS registration portfolio after 12 months service.

Main duties of the job

Receipt and registering of patient samples on to the laboratory LIMS

Prioritization of urgent samples to ensure test results are reported in a timely manner.

Testing for COVID, influenza and RSV using modern molecular techniques, full training will be provided

Competences in Remisol, WinPath LIMS and Cerner Millennium PAS would be an advantage but full training will be provided.

Maintenance and operation (under supervision) of laboratory analysers in Biochemistry, haematology and blood transfusion.

Participation in the 24hr shift rota to support acute services

Ensuring your essential training competences are always up to date.

South West London Pathology is a pathology partnership between four leading Hospital Trusts - St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, and Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals - designed to provide an integrated, high quality pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London, by bringing together the best of each Trust's service and providing them within a single organisation.

Croydon University Hospital Laboratory operates a 24hr shift system providing cover to a busy A&E and acute services. The Biochemistry Laboratory is equipped with Beckman AU5812, DxI 9000 and DXA 5000 track for pre and post analytic automation. Haematology is equipped with ACL Top 570, Beckman Coulter DxH 900 with AutoMate 1200 for pre/post analytics, as well as Immucor IRIS for automated Blood Transfusion services.

The Croydon University Hospital CBS Laboratory is UKAS accredited and has IBMS approval for training Biomedical Scientists to registration and specialist BMS level.
