Clinical Teaching Fellow - Cardiology
St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The closing date is 09 May 2025
Job summary
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a passionate interest in teaching to join our team at St George's. This post is available from August 2025 and is suitable for ST3 level doctor or higher either interested in a career or already pursuing a career in cardiology for a period of 12 months, with a view to extension, if applicable.
This exciting role will provide you with the opportunity to develop your teaching skills and enhance your understanding of all aspects of medical education. You will be involved in teaching undergraduate medical students during their cardiology attachment. Teaching will be varied and it is hoped that you will develop your own skills and be able to facilitate small group teaching, simulation training, deliver lectures to larger audiences and teach clinical skills at the bedside.
You would be expected to undertake a formal medical educational qualification and will support you in applying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Education (PGCert) at St George's, University of London (SGUL) to further develop teaching skills. This will lead to a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) qualification.
Main duties of the job
You will have the opportunity to participate in postgraduate cardiology medical teaching. It is expected that at least 50% of your time will be spent delivering and preparing for undergraduate teaching. The remainder has some flexibility to provide an excellent opportunity to be tailored to your clinical and/or academic requirements. This may include exposure to echocardiography, cardiac MRI, angiography sessions and cardiology clinics, subject to availability. There are excellent training opportunities with regular departmental meetings and journal clubs. You will be required to undertake one general Cardiology Clinic per week and may choose to participate in the cardiology on-call arrangements where appropriate, but this is not required as part of the post.
The post holder should have completed their General Professional Training and ideally hold a full MRCP or equivalent. The post holder should have experience working in the NHS and knowledge of how teaching is delivered in a UK medical school. The experience gained will provide an excellent foundation for future career opportunities in cardiology and teaching. Previous post holders have ranged from ST3-ST7 cardiology registrars, and each has succeeded in gaining a cardiology training number and/or funding for MD/PhD and the PGCert/FHEA qualification. There will also be an opportunity to attain BSE accreditation in transthoracic echocardiography and be involved in simulation courses in the GAPS centre at St George's.
