Senior Clinical Fellow in Acute Medicine (ST3 equivalent)

St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 06 May 2025

Job summary

We are seeking a Clinical Fellow at ST3+ level to deliver excellent clinical care in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at St George's Hospital.

This represents an opportunity for an enthusiastic doctor to join a dynamic clinical team in a progressive and innovative acute medical unit. This unit, with 51 beds, of which 14 form a level 2 area (equivalent to a medical HDU) and with an ambulatory area recently renewed, constitutes the ideal environment for learning and training. The Clinical Fellows will be contributing to the work of the AMU-based team, including the assessment of patients on AMU, AAA and in A&E, the care of in-patients and the attendance at Acute Medicine clinics.

The appointee will join a team of 15 SpR-level doctors (IMT3, ST4+ trainees and clinical fellows), 15 SHO-level doctors (IMT1 and 2, ACCS trainees, GP trainees, ICM trainees and clinical fellows) and 6 FY1s, working closely with 16 consultants in a hugely supported environment with consultant presence on the unit between 08:00 - 22.00.

There will also be plenty of opportunities to develop other areas of interest, such as taking part in specialty clinics (subject to specialty approval), getting involved in the teaching of under- and post-graduates, participating in service improvement projects or completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in healthcare education.

Part-time and flexible working hours are supported.

Main duties of the job

  1. The clinical fellows will be required to perform clinical work on the AMU, both as the first doctor to see patients who present to a busy urban emergency department, managing patients on the ward and participating in Acute Medicine clinics.
  2. The appointees will work closely with the admitting general medical and the multidisciplinary team, supervising the work of more junior staff.
  3. The post holders will be expected to contribute to the performance of administrative duties on the AMU - such as checking radiology reports and microbiology results - and to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service, as required.
  4. It is envisaged that the appointees would share the running of the multidisciplinary team meetings with the consultants for Acute Medicine.
  5. The post holders will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors. There may also be an opportunity to contribute to the teaching of specialist nurses and physician associates.
  6. The appointees will be expected to undertake audits and encouraged to take on clinical research projects depending on their interests.
