Job summary

The appointee will work within the multidisciplinary bariatric (& upper GI) surgery team under the direction of the Consultant Surgeons and alongside them, to interface with the other team members, comprising Nurses, Dieticians, Psychiatrists, Physicians and Anaesthetists (Table 1). The team has the expert services of Specialist Senior Dieticians and a Clinical Nurse Specialist

Main duties of the job

Expansion of St George's Hospital bariatric surgery provides an opportunity to offer this prestigious appointment.

The post is Full Time and is ideally suitable for someone who is with CCT. The appointee should have intermediate or advanced laparoscopic operating skills and will want to explore the potential for a career interest in this rapidly expanding area.

Job responsibilities

-The appointee will share with the Team members the triage of referrals and the scoring of screening questionnaires according to protocol.- The appointee will work with the Administrator to ensure that documentation is kept up-to-date and prepared for MDT meetings.-The appointee will share with the consultants, the workload in the Bariatric Patient Clinics, following the existing assessment protocol.-He/she will also share the workload in follow-up clinics, including gastric band adjustment, biochemical follow-up and ongoing assessment, again following established protocols.-He/she will conduct specific biological evaluation sessions (see timetable) for new patients and for 6, 12 and 24 month follow-up.-The Fellow will be available to advise junior clinical staff, nursing staff and PAMS on issues affecting the care of Bariatric and Upper GI patients-He/she will support secretarial and clerical staff who deal with patient enquiries but will be discouraged from conducting telephone consultations. The team provides a broad patient support framework and patient contact should be within the established clinical setting wherever possible.-He/she will provide effective liaison in clinical emergencies.-The Fellow is expected to attend the operating theatre and share operative surgery opportunities with the Consultant Bariatric surgeons and the Upper GI trainees where appropriate.-There are regular unit meetings on a weekly basis, chaired by team-members in rotation (including the appointee). Attendance is mandatory-Audit. The Fellow will take the lead in collecting audit data and will maintain NBSR on a weekly basis.
