Job summary

Applications are invited for Locum Neuro consultant posts with an interest in Neuro, General and Trauma Anaesthesia 10PAs and the post holders will join the Neuro on-call rota.

Upon appointment the post holder will be paired with a mentor for the first year. Furthermore, our set-up has much valuable support on-site as every day of the week, there is a senior Anaesthetic Consultant, acting as the Duty Floor Anaesthetist (DFA) for the overall smooth running of the operating theatres and providing urgent help and/or matching skills/experience of allocated anaesthetists with operating lists.

The post holder will join the Group of Neuro anaesthetists which consists of approximately 16 Consultants including Neuro Intensivists. This is a friendly, approachable, dynamic and diverse group, who are enthusiastic in both teaching colleagues and learning new skills from colleagues. There is emphasis in wellbeing and supporting each other. The case mix at St George's tends to be complex and challenging. Given the huge expertise in the department, it is easy to seek advice / discuss with an expert in a certain field or acquire new skills.

Main duties of the job

The post is for full time posts of 10 PAs, with 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 for SPA in support of personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal, additional responsibilities of the post holder and revalidation with an opportunity to increase as interests develop.

The job plan template is based on an alternating working pattern, weeks AC and weeks BD. Some operating lists are three session lists, for continuity of care and theatre efficiency.

Session times (inclusive of CRA (clinical related activity time)

AM - 08:00-13:00 (5 hours - 1.25PA)

PM - 13:00-18:00 (5 hours - 1.25PA)

EVE - 17:00 - 21:00 (4 hours - 1PA)

All inpatient day sessions start at 08:00 and run until 18:00; 10 hours which equates to 2.5PAs. Half day sessions are 5 hours which equates to 1.25PAs. Three session lists equate to 3.5PA's.

The consultant job plan includes 'annualised sessions' which can be worked flexibly to meet the needs of the individual and the department. Each annualised session is equivalent to the PA value of the session worked. This flexibility allows individuals to organise working patterns to support a better work life balance, whilst also ensuring we have cover within the department. It is expected that the post-holder will contribute to a proportion of annualised sessions within the field of neuroanaesthesia. The remaining annualised sessions will be within the general anaesthesia subspecialties with in the skill mix of the individual anaesthetist.
