Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join the SLT team at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful post holder will join the Band 5 rotation which includes Acute, Stroke and Neurosurgery (all based at the Tooting Site). The successful post holder will share our commitment to excellence and ensuring high standards of evidence-based practice throughout the rotation. They will be interested in developing skills in adult acquired disorders and will have an integral role in providing communication and swallowing assessment and treatment to patients. The successful post holder will be supported in their initial development, progressing to independent management of caseloads.

The successful post holder will collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team, supported by the SLT Team Leads in conjunction with the wider SLT team. They will receive regular clinical supervision and support to develop specialist clinical skills. They will be joining a highly proficient, professional, patient centered and innovative Speech and Language Therapy Team offering excellent support and well established CPD opportunities.

Main duties of the job

- With initial support working towards independent practice in assessing, treating and managing a caseload of adults with acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders that encompass a range of origins.

- Making differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment.

- Devising, implementing, and evaluating individualised treatment programmes

- Referral to instrumental assessments of swallowing

- Counselling and advising others regarding the management and care of patients with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties.

- Managing and prioritising own caseload and workload initially with support.

- Liaise with other colleagues and professional groups and referring patients for further investigation and/or second opinions as required.

-Maintaining adequate records of assessment, management, and treatment of patients.

Position will be based at St George's site

To contribute clinically to both uni and multi-disciplinary teams by discussing SLT and other team members input around client-centred goals. Maintaining a coordinated management and treatment approach ensuring patients/clients, carers and families are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible.

To develop skills to liaise with and/or coordinate the MDT for that client/patient's admission, discharge, goal planning and case conferences

To devise, implement and evaluate individualized SLT treatment programs incorporating group treatment where appropriate

To develop dysphagia assessment, treatment and management skills, with initial support.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of completion of specialist short courses and self directed study

  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
