Job summary

St Georges University NHS Foundation trust is looking for a consultant in Infection to join our friendly and vibrant department.

The Infection department at St Georges is a great place to work with a dynamic and innovative combined infection team where microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, HIV and academics all work very closely and in conjunction with the onsite NHS South West London Pathology (SWLP). This post represents an exciting opportunity to combine clinical practice in diagnostic and laboratory microbiology with direct care to inpatients and outpatients with infection-related problems. This post has arisen due to a retirement and other members of the department reducing their duties.

About us

This exciting opportunity has arisen to join the St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant in one of the largest and most dynamic combined Infection units in the country. It is a unique new opportunity to combine clinical practice in diagnostic and microbiology with direct care to inpatients and outpatients with infection-related problems. The appointee will be joining a team of clinicians committed to providing excellent clinical care to patients with infection-related problems. St George's hosts South-West London Pathology (SWLP), the provider of pathology services to three major acute Trusts (St George's, Kingston and Croydon) covering a population of 1,250,000, in addition to pathology services for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore with the microbiology laboratory on site at St Georges.

The post-holder will share responsibilities, with other consultants, for the organisation, management and delivery of a comprehensive infection service, and for the training programme for Specialist Trainees in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology.

This is a 10PA programmed role and will be designated for clinical work. The successful post holder will join and contribute to a strong innovative consultant body and it is envisaged that the post holder will complement and strengthen the existing subspecialties within the care group which include leadership for the infection prevention and control team, antimicrobial stewardship, OPAT, infection on the Intensive Care Units, hospital-acquired infection, surgical site infections, HIV medicine/co-infection (hepatitis / TB), travel-related infection, tuberculosis (including MDRTB), and the treatment of invasive fungal infections. Oncall for Medical Microbiology/Clinical infection overnight and at weekends will be included on an approximately 1:8 basis. We strongly support flexible working in the department. We would encourage the post holder to take an interest in laboratory microbiology particularly the introduction and implementation of new molecular tests.

Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • The CCT should be in medical microbiology/virology or infectious diseases / medical microbiology.
  • FRCPath (or equivalent) or expected by the date of interview.

Desirable

  • Recognised management qualification
  • Diploma in Hospital Infection Control (or equivalent)
  • Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H)
  • Recognised teaching qualification. MRCP (or equivalent)
  • An appropriate higher degree (e.g., an MD, PhD or equivalent).

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in the management of patients with complex infection problems
  • Experience providing clinical support to a microbiology laboratory.
  • Experience in providing infection control support.
  • Experience of clinical audit
