Senior Clinical Research Practitioner/Nurse - Genetics

Job summary

  • The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination and management of the Genetics research team at St Georges Hospital.
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with the Genetics Research Lead, Head of Research Nursing and the wider multidisciplinary team in the management of a portfolio of clinical trials and be accountable for the achievement of local and national targets in relation to the service.
  • The post holder will be involved in ensuring that any research undertaken safeguards the well-being of the patient and is conducted within Good Clinical Practice Guidelines for research.
  • The post holder will have the skills to lead by example as an expert practitioner providing organisation and leadership to the multi-professional team and supporting the patient throughout a clinical trial.
  • The post holder will also be expected to have sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patients advocate.
  • The post holder must also be willing to move to different clinical specialties within the remit of their qualifications and where the need to do so is identified.

Main duties of the job

  • This is an exciting opportunity to join the research team in the Genetics department as a Senior Clinical Research Nurse/Genetic Counsellor/ Practitioner.
  • The post holder will work on NIHR portfolio studies within St George's and primarily within the Medical Genetics Department.
  • They will work closely with and line manage the existing research team consisting of 2 Research Practitioners, a clinical trials assistant, and other flexible research staff.
  • The post holder will be responsible for delivering an agreed portfolio of Genetics Research Studies such as Cancer, Rare Diseases and Neurology.
  • Central to this role is responsibility for assessing and managing the care pathways for patients participating in clinical trials.
  • You will be involved in a range of research activities, including co-ordinating study set-up and procedures and collecting data.
  • You will need to have solid experience with research governance and have proven experience in setting up commercial and academic IMP studies.
  • You will have excellent staff management, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, possess strong motivation and have the ability to work autonomously whilst integrating with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Genetics experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Informal visits strongly encouraged.

  • Biomedical Sciences or related graduate qualification in speciality or clinical research related field
  • Teaching & assessing qualification or equivalent relevant experience
  • NMC Registered Adult Nurse
  • Nursing Degree/ Diploma
  • Genetics Counsellor Registration

Desirable

  • Completed Master's degree in the speciality or related field or willing to work towards

Previous experience/ knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of managing a complex clinical research workload at Band 6 or above
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships
