Job summary
We intend to provide the highest standard of care to all patients attending the Emergency Department (ED). Our consultants deliver a 24/7 service within the Emergency Department acting as exemplary trauma team leaders, to deliver optimal management of patients in the resuscitation stage, contributing to improved outcomes for victims of trauma, benchmarked against international standards. The post holder will work similarly with colleagues in Acute Medicine and all other acute admitting specialties to ensure optimal pathways for the care of all patients admitted as an emergency.
Consultants are encouraged to develop special areas of interest (research, education and/or clinical expertise) and particular initiatives can be accommodated in the job description.
Main duties of the job
Leading or supervising the resuscitation and treatment of patients with life threatening injury or illness in the resuscitation room
Leading in the ED, EECU and PAU
Assessing, reviewing, treating and managing patients in the Majors, UTC & Paediatric areas of the department
Facilitating patients' discharge, or admission and transfer to the ward, as appropriate
Care of patients on the Extended Emergency Care Unit
Supervising junior doctors, and providing support to Emergency Practitioners and other nursing staff
Liaison with other departments and escalating problems to the relevant member of inpatient teams
Monitoring activity in the department as a whole, and dealing with any other urgent day to day issues which affect the smooth running of the department
Administrative matters relating to patient care, including dealing with an appropriate share of complaints, and liaison with other departments in the hospital and general practitioners.
Participation in training programmes for medical and nursing staff, and medical students in cooperation with colleagues (including educational supervision).
