Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled assistant psychologist to work within the Red Cell Pain Management and Psychology Service (RCPMPS) at St George's Hospital. The postholder will work with individuals living with red cell conditions including sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassaemia, aiming to address their psychological needs in an underserved area of healthcare. Our service focuses on providing compassionate care through multidisciplinary collaboration and cultural awareness, making it a dynamic and rewarding role.
The RCPMPS provides both inpatient and outpatient psychological support for individuals experiencing mood difficulties related to haemoglobinopathies, adjustment issues and treatment adherence. Since 2013 it has also offered an innovative pain management service for adults with sickle cell disease, building up a strong reputation for excellence. It offers individual and group work, alongside an experienced pain management physiotherapist and a pain consultant.
Main duties of the job
Although based at St George's Hospital, the assistant psychologist will work across various settings within a newly developed community multidisciplinary team (MDT) across South London. This includes supporting adult patients, families and caregivers affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) in boroughs like Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton, Kingston and Richmond. The postholder will collaborate with professionals such as a Social Prescribing Link Worker, haematology doctors, community and hospital clinical nurse specialists, as well as ward nursing staff and the apheresis team who are very supportive of psychology input. This collaborative approach fosters creativity and emphasizes teamwork to support patients from diverse backgrounds.
About us
The 0.6 WTE Assistant Psychologist will primarily support and improve psychological care within the RCPMPS team by aiding clinical service delivery and developments. This includes assisting in various clinically related administrative tasks e.g. data collection, managing the referrals database, supporting clinical triage, administering patient satisfaction questionnaires, conducting audits, collecting patient outcome measures and statistics and attending meetings related to pilot delivery. Additionally, they will support the development and implementation of current and new initiatives planned by the team, such as support groups, movement groups, pain management programmes, reflective practice and education sessions.
There will be opportunities to contribute directly to patient care under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist, in either individual or group settings. This will involve working independently based on a plan agreed upon with the psychologist and within the service's policies and procedures. This may depend on existing knowledge/skills. Opportunities will also be provided to observe professionals within the team (including but not limited to clinical psychologists) to broaden understanding of psychological input with people living with sickle cell alongside the healthcare teams that work with them.
