Job summary

St Georges University NHS Foundation trust is looking for a consultant in Infection to join our friendly and vibrant department.

The Infection department at St Georges is a great place to work with a dynamic and innovative combined infection team where microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, HIV and academics all work very closely and in conjunction with the onsite NHS South West London Pathology (SWLP).

. The appointee will be joining a team of clinicians committed to providing excellent clinical care to patients with infection-related problems. St George's hosts South-West London Pathology (SWLP), the provider of pathology services to four major acute Trusts (St George's, Kingston, Croydon and Epsom and St Helier's) and one of the largest consolidated (NHS) microbiology services in England. In addition, SWLP provides pathology services for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore with the microbiology laboratory on site at St Georges. We have had considerable investment in the SWLP molecular service in the past few years and are looking for a dynamic new consultant to develop this further.

Main duties of the job

The Infectious Diseases component of the post is optional and flexible and can be discussed if a suitably qualified and enthusiastic candidate is appointed. This could include inpatient work, referrals +/- outpatient clinics (in HIV or infectious diseases). We also have a large foetal medicine unit and the applicant, if they wish, would be supported to develop a clinical virology service with expertise in infections in pregnancy. Other opportunities might include expanding our renal and haematology infection services, developing an "immunocompromised patient service"for assessment and management of patients on immunomodulatory drugs, or developing an education and training programme as part of our role as a Specialist Regional Infectious Diseases Centre. There is also the possibility of academic sessions in the university if a suitably qualified candidate is appointed.

The post-holder will share responsibilities, with other consultants, for the organisation, management and delivery of a comprehensive infection service, and for the training programme for Specialist Trainees in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology/Medical Virology
