Diving right in, you check the quality assurance data for - gamma cameras, counters, calibrators, and PET/CT scanners. Just as you immerse yourself in this task, a call from a colleague interrupts your focus - the clinical team require your expertise. It's time to roll up your sleeves and manage essential services such as GFR and radio-iodine therapy, ensuring strict adherence to regulations.

As the afternoon unfolds, fresh opportunities await you as the appointed MPE. You head to one of three independent sites, where you tackle the challenges of IR(ME)R legislative compliance and implement necessary changes. In addition, you provide support on new equipment such as the GE 870 CZT SPECTCT and Hidex gamma counter. Not stopping there, you help establish and optimise imaging protocols, while also pioneering groundbreaking non-imaging procedures.

Going beyond direct clinical work, you'll lead and participate in groundbreaking service development projects. Some recent projects have included evaluating a state-of-the-art robotic PET painting phantom, designing a sophisticated head manikin specifically tailored for sentinel node training, and pushing the boundaries of innovation by exploring the remarkable potential of Varskin as an invaluable tool for extravasated administrations.

Main duties of the job

When you join our small dynamic physics team, you'll have the opportunity to deliver on every aspect of Nuclear Medicine Physics, working within many multi-disciplinary teams both on and offsite to gain a wealth of experience with multi-vendor equipment to really enhance your development with the wealth of opportunities available.

  • To work as part of a team providing physics support to the Nuclear Medicine Department within the Nuclear Medicine Physics Group.
  • To support specialised diagnostic and therapy services in the Nuclear Medicine Department with clinical, scientific, technical and computing support.
  • To support and manage training elements in the department, including the local STP programme.
  • Direct patient contact is through managing and administering patients with radionuclide therapy and when delivering individual radiation protection advice.
  • Support to other scientific staff in the provision of a Medical Physics service at external sites to which a physics service is provided. This includes at nuclear medicine and PET-CT mobile and fixed site facilities.
  • To become an appointed Medical Physics Expert for nominated external sites in support of compliance with IRMER 2017 regulations. Certified MPEs or sufficiently experienced applicants that are close to apply for MPE certification are encouraged to apply.
  • Routine travel to externally supported sites is expected.
