Job summary

Phlebotomy see on average 2,000 patients a week working with a large variety of specialities to provide the best possible patient experience. An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 Band 3 Senior Phlebotomists in our Blood Testing Department.

We are looking for enthusiastic and vibrant experienced phlebotomists to lead a small team of junior phlebotomists as well as perform phlebotomy on adults and children.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job will be to take blood samples from adults and children within our various departments. Senior band 3 phlebotomists will also be expected to lead a small team of junior band 2 phlebotomists and be responsible for mentoring and carrying out appraisals for their team. Staff will work across all areas and sites on a rotational basis and are also required to work some weekends and Bank holidays.

You will need to be a dynamic and motivated phlebotomist with at least 12 months experience in an NHS or private hospital setting. Our department also has community settings across 4 sites and so you will also need to be flexible regarding working times and locations but this also means that you are in no danger of getting bored.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide a welcoming initial point of contact for patients, staff and visitors to the department.
  • To always deal compassionately and professionally with all patients and relatives.
  • Can deal effectively, and seek assistance where necessary, when dealing with patients more complex, such as patients with learning difficulties, mental health disorders, language barriers, young children, the elderly and disabled.
  • Can remain calm and composed when working in acute ward environments.

  • To collect blood samples from paediatric patients, ensuring that all standards and recommended guidelines set by the Trust are adhered to.
  • To be able to make a judgement as to whether assistance is required with patients thus avoiding a dangerous situation.
  • To ensure the quality and integrity of each specimen collected by following all departmental and manufacturer guidelines.
  • To hand-write appropriate specimens and associated documentation legibly, checking thoroughly, in preparation for distribution to the laboratories.
  • Operate the Vacuum Transport System competently when sending specimens to the laboratories.
  • Deal effectively with trouble-shooting issues associated with the transportation of samples to the laboratories.

  • Adhere to Manual Handling Regulations, as is relative to the frequent requirement for sitting or standing in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the time.
  • To be aware, always, of the standard procedures for the handling of biological material from patients and dealing with biological material spillages.
  • To ensure all clinical and domestic waste is disposed of effectively in line with all departmental and Trust policies.
  • To assist in maintaining blood collection equipment, storage areas, workplace, and workbenches in a clean, tidy, well-organised state.
  • To maintain a professional appearance at all times, adhering to Trust Uniform and Infection control policies and procedures.
  • To undertake reporting and data entry of adverse incidents on the Trust DATIX Web system.
  • Ensure all patient documentation and essential clinical information is accurate.
  • To assist in maintaining stock levels of all associated consumables and participate in the management of stock rotation.
  • To deal effectively with queries from patients, staff and telephone enquiries.
  • To report to the Phlebotomy Manager any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.
