Job summary

The Immunology and Protein Reference Unit at South West London Pathology (SWLP) has an exciting opportunity for a Band 8b Immunology and Protein Reference Unit Manager.

The speciality hosts one of two UK Supraregional Assay Services Protein Reference Units. The laboratory is well equipped to provide a wide range of specific proteins and immunology tests for patients in SWLP and for over 100 referring laboratories. The department actively encourages development opportunities, further education and CPD activities. The department prides itself on innovation and is currently going through a period of transformational change to future proof the growing service.

You should demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills and have a sound knowledge and experience within Immunology. Being able to manage multiple activities and a range of responsibilities simultaneously is a must. The demands of this role are multi-faceted, and a candidate who can make decisions, is a self-starter, and efficiently prioritises their workload is essential. Candidates should have demonstrable experience of leadership, management and HR processes, and must have successfully lead change within a service.

Main duties of the job

Candidates will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Immunology and PRU laboratory. This includes the quality of service delivery, meeting KPIs, and reporting daily operational updates and escalations to the Divisional General Manager. A key element of this role is to be responsible for informing and implementing strategic developments within the service, setting priorities, initiating developments, and contributing to developments across SWL Pathology as appropriate as a member of the management team.

The Immunology and Protein Reference Unit is a large and dynamic department, within the Division of Infection and Immunity. The post holder will be supported by the General Manager for the Division and will have two Band 8a's in their team (Band 8a Technical Lead and Band 8a Quality Manager) plus five Band 7 section leads. We pride ourselves on close operational and clinical leadership, and the post hold will work closely the Clinical Lead and team of Consultant Clinical Scientists. The service has a total of 36 WTE staff, which is likely to increase in the coming months as our service continues to grow. The department was newly refurbished in 2021 into a large open plan space.
