Job summary

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant Neurosurgeon. The successful candidate is expected to be an integral member of the Team providing neurosurgery input to the Major Trauma Service.

It is critical that the successful candidate has the enthusiasm to integrate within a busy and thriving neurosurgical department.

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder will attend the 2-3 per week of the daily (Mon-Fri) Trust wide 'Major Trauma Meetings'.
  • The post-holder will be expected to hold a weekly outpatient clinic and manage the inpatients under their care.
  • The post-holder will participate on the Neurosurgery on call rota (1 in 14, non-residential).
  • They will be allocated ad hoc weekly operating lists depending on capacity.
  • The post-holder will be expected to cover neurosurgical emergencies including paediatrics. The post is primarily aimed at forging links with the Major Trauma Centres and the prospective applicant is expected to take a major interest in the management of both cranial and spinal trauma.
  • The post-holder will be the lead for major trauma for neurosurgery, and with that the expectation of forging links with relevant specialties within the trust, and participating in the active management of the multiply injured patient.
  • This post-holder will also be expected to take part in a consultant of the week rota on a 1 in 14 basis.
  • The post-holder will be expected to maintain their continuous professional development and will be supported in doing so by the department and Trust.
  • The post-holder will be supported in their role by a mentor from within the department.
  • The post-holder will be expected to complete their annual appraisal and engage with the revalidation process.

About us

The Trust is on three sites, acute services at St George's Hospital, St John's Therapy Centre, Battersea, where services for the care of elderly patients are based and Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton which offers specialist inpatient amputee and neurological rehabilitation as well as inpatient intermediate and elderly care. The Trust serves a resident population of about 300,000 and two local Primary Care Trusts, Wandsworth and Sutton & Merton which have a combined population of approximately 600,000. From 1 October 2010, it also took on responsibility for providing Community Services on behalf of NHS Wandsworth.

  • Orthopaedic surgery including orthopaedic spine surgery
  • Maxillofacial and ophthalmic surgery
  • ENT and ENT skull base surgery with a endoscopic skull base service
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
