Job description

Job responsibilities

Duties on the Neuro Intensive care unit will be carried out as part of a team of consultant intensivists and junior clinical fellows. The post-holder will gain clinical experience in the management of severe traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, spinal cord injury, elective and emergency post-operative neurosurgical cases and neurological disease requiring advanced organ monitoring and support.

Research activity will include the collection and analysis of physiological data obtained from patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) and will provide a better understanding of how the human spinal cord responds to injury. This research, pursued by previous research Fellows in the Department, has already generated several novel concepts in the field of TSCI including the concepts of dural spinal cord compression, spinal pressure reactivity, compensatory reserve, optimum spinal cord perfusion pressure that varies between and within patients and the idea of individualized management. This exciting post provides a unique opportunity to develop the novel field of neuromonitoring for TSCI. The research combines a variety of disciplines including neurosurgery, intensive care, physiology, signal processing, multi-variable data analysis and computer programming with direct clinical applications for improving the care of TSCI patients.

The rota on the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is currently an 8-person full shift system (see Appendix 1). It attracts a banding of 1A (50%) and is made up of day shifts (08:00-18:00), long day shifts (08:00-21:00) and nights (20:00-09:00)). The post holder will be part of the registrar tier with direct consultant supervision during the day and indirect supervision out-of-hours. The long day shifts, night and weekend shifts will be spent on NICU and the majority of normal day shifts will be used for research activity.
