Acute Kidney Injury Lead Nurse
Band 8a
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Acute Kidney Injury Lead Nurse position at St Georges University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The post will be based in our Renal Department but the successful candidate will lead, develop and deliver an outreach Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) nursing service to promote and improve the care of AKI in the Trust as well as work across the Trust sites and Kingston Hospital.
The successful candidate will provide training and education opportunities for the nursing and medical teams to improve care of AKI patients in the Trust.
Leading the co-ordination and running of Acute Kidney Injury outpatient services the candidate will run an AKI clinic for patients post discharge from hospital.
The successful candidate will develop evidence based clinical nursing practice in the specialist area in line with current research, guidelines and protocols.
The candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills, be able to work flexible hours.

Main duties of the job
- Provide support and liaise with A&E and AMU teams for early identification and prompt commencing of treatment to AKI patients
- To be a visible expert in the clinical nursing care of Acute Kidney Injury
- To provide an advanced specialist nursing service for people with AKI including identification, testing and treatment
- To manage an AKI patient caseload, ensuring continuity of a high standard of evidence based nursing care, from point of assessment through necessary procedures, to recovery, renal replacement therapy of transfer.
- To support the medical team in ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and make onwards referrals where appropriate.
- To assist the medical lead with the development of a system for identifying early AKI, including presenting all AKI cases to the medical lead on a regular basis
- To lead and develop the AKI nursing service within the Trust and outreach locations in line with best evidence and local, national and international guidelines and protocols.
- To have an extensive awareness of the role of the AKI service in local care provision.
- Leading, developing and delivering an outreach Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) nursing service to promote and improve the care of AKI in the Trust.
