The various modalities of renal failure are each led by a nominated Consultant. As with most renal units there is strong multidisciplinary team working. There are 12 haemodialysis stations on site and most patients are also dialysed at satellite dialysis units in Colliers wood, North Wandsworth and Kingston. The Renal/Transplant Ward is fully plumbed for dialysis and has a separate acute dialysis area, the unit also has CAPD and Transplant clinics.

On average the unit conducts around 130-140 transplants per year. The stock of transplant patients is approximately 500. The unit has an active living donor and deceased transplant programme. This has been enhanced by offering hand assisted laparoscopic retroperitoneal nephrectomy. The renal unit is part of an expanding service; currently there are approximately 350 haemodialysis patients and a 50-60 on peritoneal dialysis. The unit is a centre of excellence for the placement of complex vascular access.

There are daily consultant-led transplant, general nephrology, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and weekly advanced kidney care clinics. Specialist clinics are held in clinical genetics (tuberous sclerosis), diabetic nephropathy, renal stones, paediatric-adult transition, preconception counselling/pregnancy clinics and kidney-heart failure clinic.

Main duties of the job

About us

St George's Hospital is one of four major trauma centres for London, and home to hyper acute stroke and heart attack centres. We operate one of London's four helipads, which means we treat some of the most unwell and severely injured patients from across the south of England.

We are one of London's largest children's hospitals, with one of only four paediatric trauma units in London. St George's also hosts the only paediatric intensive care unit in south west London. We are one of the top three centres for specialist paediatric surgery in London, and a centre of excellence in fetal medicine.

St George's is also a major centre for neurosciences, and the third largest provider in London for neurosurgery. We also offer many innovative treatments for patients - for example, we were the first centre in the country to provide a 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service, which involves surgically removing blood clots from the brain for patients who have had a stroke.

Many of our services are also part of established clinical networks, which bring together clinicians and support staff from a range of healthcare providers to improve the quality of services for patients. In 2015, we became a Foundation Trust, which gives us greater control over how we run and organise our services.
