Locum Breast Consultant Surgeon

The Breast Services Department is looking to appoint a Locum Breast Surgeon Consultant to join the organization. The post is available for 8 months with a potential to extend contractual arrangements. The new post holder will join an established surgical team of 3 Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, 1 Oncoplastic Breast and Endocrine Surgeon and 1 Endocrine Surgeons. The post is 8 PAs. and is ideally suitable for someone who has an interest in Oncoplastic Surgery.

The breast services offer daily one stop outpatient clinics. The NHS Breast Screening Service for South West London is collocated with the Breast Services Department. The Endocrine Service provides a tertiary service and works in close collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology and Genetics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join an established surgical team of four Consultant Breast Surgeons that provide the full range of oncoplastic surgical procedures for both benign and malignant breast disorders. This ranges from simple excisions right up to immediate and delayed breast reconstructions including free flap surgery. The plastics team has developed close links with the Breast Service to offer immediate and delayed micro-surgical breast reconstruction.

Breast cancer makes up 15% of the total Trust cancer activity and diagnoses circa 300 new breast cancer cases a year.

The appointee will join a team of three consultant breast surgeons, one consultant breast and endocrine surgeon and one consultant endocrine surgeon.

The current job plan is focused on delivering elective breast services through weekly outpatient, day surgery and main Theatre sessions. The job does not attract a general surgery on-call commitment.

The appointee is expected to undertake teaching duties of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other professional groups, to participate in research activities and to play a full part in the clinical governance of oncoplastic and breast surgery.

About us

The Breast Cancer Service offers diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy all on the St George's Hospital site. The service is co-located with the South West London Breast Screening Service. The Breast symptomatic service provides a full range of oncoplastic surgical procedures for both benign and malignant breast disorders. This ranges from simple excisions right up to immediate and delayed breast reconstructions including free flap surgery such as DIEP flaps.

All breast referrals are seen within 2 weeks of referral and can be seen in any of the daily one stop Breast Clinics. The diagnostic process is undertaken by a team of consultant breast surgeons, advanced nurse practitioners, breast diagnosticians and surgical trainees. This one-stop model of care provides the on-the-day services to patients where appropriate including FNA and image guided biopsy.

The Breast service has an established Breast Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team which includes breast oncoplastic surgeons, breast plastic surgeons, dedicated breast radiologists, clinical and medical oncologists, clinical nurse specialists, breast nurse practitioners and pathologists with special interests in breast disease. The MDT meet every Wednesday to discuss all newly diagnosed patients, patients undergoing treatment and those with recurrent disease.

Chemotherapy is offered on site in both a day case and inpatient setting. St George's partners with the Royal Marsden Hospital to provide radiotherapy treatment.

Management Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to work with professional colleagues and local managers in the efficient running of the Service, and will share with Consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. S/he will be expected to participate in the Trusts system of governance, and audit and maintain their CME/CPD. S/he will also have a commitment to participate in the Trusts professional development. The appointee will be expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedure, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

The consultant appointed will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of his/her department. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical department.

Clinical Governance and Audit Responsibilities:

The appointee will be expected to participate in the Trusts Clinical Governance activities related to general and specialist surgery and his/her chosen specialty (i.e. Breast surgery). This will include contributing to clinical audit, clinical risk activities and clinical incident reporting, responding to complaints within the Trusts expected timescale, and helping to involve users in planning and monitoring of the various clinical services.

Continuing Professional Development:

The appointee will fulfill Royal College of Surgeons and GMC guidelines for continuing professional development. The post-holder will be encouraged to attend courses and continue in their education.

The post-holder will participate in the Breast MDT and will be encouraged to lead and participate in audits. S/he will also participate in 6-weekly clinical governance morbidity and mortality reviews as part of the general surgery care group.

In line with trust policy the post-holder will be appraised on an annual basis.

The appointee will be expected to be committed to the concept of lifelong learning and to produce and maintain a personal development plan in agreement with his/her Clinical Lead in General Surgery. Study leave is available as provided for under the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff, subject to approval by the Assistant Clinical Director / General Manager.
