Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Paediatric Lung Function and Sleep Unit at St George's Hospital. We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic senior respiratory physiologist. This is an exciting role, which would be a great opportunity for a Band 5 looking to take on their next challenge and/or develop their skills within paediatric respiratory physiology.

The paediatric physiology service continues to develop. We are currently performing full lung function testing and sleep studies, including pulse oximetry, transcutaneous CO2 monitoring and polygraphy studies. We perform these tests in outpatient clinics and in an inpatient environment.

We are a small, close knit and busy team, looking for someone who will not only excel professionally but will fit in and thrive in the environment and work well not only within the physiology team but within the wider multi-professional team.

The successful candidate will need to be an experienced, friendly and highly motivated person. The role will involve working autonomously, therefore the ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team is essential, as well as a commitment to providing a high-quality service is essential.

As the successful candidate, you will be required to perform, interpret and have an excellent understanding of a full range of lung function and sleep investigations within our paediatric service. The role will also allow 1 session per week, rotating into the adult physiology service.

Main duties of the job

The main duties are as follows

  • To work in paediatric services for lung function and sleep investigations and treatment.
  • To perform, analyse and produce reports on a full range of lung function tests without supervision.
  • Set-up, download and analyse inpatient and domiciliary respiratory sleep studies.
  • Score and report on polygraphy.
  • To maintain, calibrate and disinfect the equipment according to Trust and departmental policy.
  • Support administration staff with the booking of appointments and ensure appropriate information is entered onto Trust and departmental databases.
  • Supervise and assist in the training of student Nurses, Physiotherapists and Medical Students.
  • Take a role in the training and development of trainee and junior respiratory physiologists.
  • To fulfil a supporting role in the sleep service for paediatrics in conjunction with the respiratory team.
  • To have a flexible approach to working that matches the clinical needs of the service that will involve shift-work and working cross-site.
  • At least 1 session per week rotating into the adult physiology service when service needs allow.

About us

As a prestigious teaching hospital, we are closely linked to the University and play a role in the teaching of students. You will be expected to play a role in the education and training of respiratory physiology trainees as well as other healthcare professionals including physiotherapists, nursing staff, medical students and junior doctors. You will also be given the opportunity to develop your leadership skills by taking a role in the development of junior and trainee respiratory physiologists in the department. Appropriate support and training will be offered.

A Clinical Physiology BSc or equivalent is required with at least two years experience as a Band 5 Clinical Physiologist. ARTP Part 1 and 2 / associate and practitioner level qualifications are desirable. The appointee should be RCCP registered or working towards RCCP registration.
