Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3 Equivalent)
Clinical Pharmacology // Acute Medicine
This ST3+ Clinical Fellow post has been created to fill a vacancy created by a gap in a training programme. The post is designed to deliver Clinical Pharmacology services in the Trust and contribute to the non-acute medical registrar rota.
The Clinical Pharmacology Group comprises 7 consultants and 5 trainees (including this post). Clinical Pharmacology is situated in the Trust within Pharmacy and the team works closely with the Chief Pharmacist and their pharmacy team to 'make sure that patients get the best medicines'.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will have a fantastic opportunity to work with one of the biggest NHS Clinical Pharmacology teams in the UK, contributing to delivery of the following services:
- Medicines management including: membership of formulary and medicines optimisation committees/groups, subregional immunoglobulin assessment panel, performing audits relating to the effective and safe use of medicines
- Specialist clinical pharmacology services including: clinics, multidisciplinary meetings, advice services and service innovation in the areas of polypharmacy, multimorbidity and pharmacogenomics
- Prescribing education for undergraduates and postgraduates, medical and independent prescribers, including work to audit and improve use of our electronic medicines prescribing and administration system (EPMA)
- Clinical trials, contributing to recruitment, taking informed consent, supervising patients in trials and providing sub-investigator support for the work of the Clinical Research Facility
- The Clinical Fellow will contribute to the non-acute medical registrar rota (1:11, no nights, which includes acute take and ward cover out of hours)

Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full registration with General Medical Council. At least 12 months experience working in Emergency or Acute General Medicine. To have achieved provider status in at least one of ALS, ATLS and APLS.
- Postgraduate diploma (e.g. MRCP(UK), MCEM, MRCS).
Desirable
- Additional relevant clinical experience, including working at middle grade level in some aspect of Clinical Pharmacology (medicines management, polypharmacy, pharmacogenomics, prescribing education, clinical trials)
- Where applicants have training and or experience in pharmacy prior to medicine this would be very relevant
Knowledge and skills
Essential
- Able to manage a wide range of general medical conditions in inpatient and outpatient settings
- Broad knowledge of pharmacology and clinical pharmacology
- Competent in procedures required for general medicine, including resuscitation skills, chest drain insertion, central venous line insertion, lumbar puncture.
- Able to prioritise clinical need
- Able to work independently, but aware of own limitations and knows when to ask for help from consultant or colleague in other specialties.
- Demonstrates good practice around patient confidentiality and data protection.

- Able to recognise and manage adverse drug reactions and medication errors
- Able to perform, analyse and present audits and complete the audit loop
