Senior Sister/Charge Nurse

Job summary

The post holder is responsible for managing all aspects of the apheresis and stem cell collection facility. This service is firmly embedded within a quality management framework. The main aim is to co-ordinate and organize all donor (stem cell, lymphocyte) and therapeutic (plasma exchange, leucodepletion, red cell exchange) apheresis services, procedures, investigations and consent to expedite care in a cohesive and safe manner that meets accreditation standards.

He/she provides support, information and advice to the patient, family, multi-disciplinary clinical teams, referring hospitals and the community. This involves both inpatient and outpatient care, ensuring the patient has all medical, nursing, physical, psychological and social needs addressed.

The post holder needs to have prior experience in apheresis and will be required to take part in the on-call rota to maintain the 24/7 service cover. In addition he/she will lead audits on policies and practises related to apheresis and the stem cell collection facility, provide education andtraining for nurses / medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary team pertinent to the role and ensure relevant documentation is maintained and where relevant, reported.

The post holder will be responsible for managing the apheresis nursing team providing leadership and direction.

The unit is responsible for providing a comprehensive Apheresis service for the entire Trust and catchment area. We undertake automated red cell exchange, therapeutic plasma exchange, leukodepletion and peripheral stem cell harvests. Soon we will be adding T-cell collections for our new CAR T-cell therapy service.

Full training and mentorship will be provided, which includes training in ultrasound-guided peripheral vein cannulation. You will have the opportunity to design and lead clinical audits and research. Further education opportunities are also available.

The successful candidate will possess competent venepuncture and cannulation skills. They will have a track record of motivating others and implementing change. Additionally, they will be able to organise and prioritise their own and other's workloads, within an environment that requires flexibility and the need to work under pressure at times. Grounded experience in haematology nursing and a willingness to partake in the on-call service is essential.
