Job summary

St Georges University NHS Foundation trust is looking for a consultant in Infection to join our friendly and vibrant department. The post is a replacement for colleagues who are taking on new part time roles outside the department creating this new opportunity.

The Infection department at St Georges is a great place to work with a dynamic and innovative combined infection team where microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, HIV and academics all work very closely and in conjunction with the onsite NHS South West London Pathology (SWLP). We are looking for someone to join the team to work predominantly in medical microbiology while also enjoying clinical work and patient facing roles. There will be opportunities to develop services or leadership roles within the laboratory or clinical service and depending on the candidate appointed.

Main duties of the job

Outpatient clinics

The post holder will provide cover for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology with the opportunity to develop other clinics depending on the post holder's specialist interests.

Out of hours work and on call

The out of hours Infectious Diseases service is a 24 hour/7 day a week responsibility while acting as the attending Infectious Diseases Consultant.

Management responsibility

The post holder is expected to be involved with teaching junior staff in the tutorials, case presentations and the Grand Round.

It is a unique new opportunity to combine clinical practice in diagnostic and microbiology with direct care to inpatients and outpatients with infection-related problems. The appointee will be joining a team of clinicians committed to providing excellent clinical care to patients with infection-related problems. St George's hosts South-West London Pathology (SWLP), the provider of pathology services to three major acute Trusts (St George's, Kingston and Croydon) covering a population of 1,250,000, in addition to pathology services for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore with the microbiology laboratory on site at St Georges.

The post-holder will share responsibilities, with other consultants, for the organisation, management and delivery of a comprehensive infection service, and for the training programme for Specialist Trainees in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology.
