Job summary

To support and enhance the psychological care of clients within the community neurorehabilitation services serving South West London; providing neuropsychological assessment and interventions under the supervision of a qualified clinical neuropsychologist, working independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified neuropsychologist and within the overall framework of the service's policies and procedures. To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collection of statistics, development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work.

Main duties of the job

The role provides a rich array of clinical experience, and experience of multidisciplinary working. You will also be part of the wider Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Health Psychology Department comprising of Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Health Psychologists, Neuropsychologists, and Assistant Psychologists across St Georges University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with regular opportunities for training and networking. The role is well suited for someone hoping to obtain a place on Clinical Psychology Training.

The Department provides neuropsychology services in acute, tertiary, day/out-patient and community rehabilitation settings for clients with acquired neurological disorders, their families and carers. The Assistant Psychologist plays an important role in supporting service delivery by providing structured interventions to manage the emotional, behavioural and cognitive consequences of acquired neurological conditions. The post holder will work under the supervision of the Lead Clinical Neuropsychologist, and alongside a multidisciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Nurses, and Rehabilitation Assistants.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society (GBC)
  • Clinical experience sufficient to train as a Psychological Well-Being practitioner

Desirable

  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, Neuropsychology / mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
  • Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner qualification (approved IAPT training)

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial clinical experience working as an Assistant Psychologist with a neurological population
  • Experience of working autonomously and managing a caseload of patients (under the clinical supervision of qualified psychologist)
  • Familiarity with use of CBT techniques in clinical settings

Desirable

  • Experience of using standardised neuropsychological assessments with people with cognitive impairment.
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Familiarity with CBT for people with long term health conditions
  • Experience of working with people with cognitive impairment/ Neurological disability

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • An understanding of psychology applied to health care.

  • Experience of databases or data-analysis, especially SPSS for Windows.
