Job summary
Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow post to start in August 2023 or February 2024. All posts are for an initial 6 month contract, however following review can be extended to 12 months with the potential to combine with other fellowships.
This post is designed for an anaesthetist with the final FRCA or equivalent, an interest in developing obstetrics as an ongoing career aim and provides opportunity to work at a senior level in a busy high-risk obstetric unit. The post-holder would be expected to work clinically on labour ward with opportunity for related projects and with a 1 in 9 on-call commitment to delivery suite. There is the opportunity to work in other theatre areas which may be of interest and a service commitment to the general theatres, usually 8 daytime shifts in 6 months. The post-holder will attend monthly meetings within the Obstetric Unit on various aspects of Risk Management, Education and High Risk Obstetric Clinics.

Main duties of the job
The High-Risk Obstetric Anaesthetic Clinic sees more than 300 patients per year. and provides MDT planning for women with medical disorders and anticipated obstetric or anaesthesia problems in pregnancy and delivery. The range of conditions you will see at this clinic range from anaesthesia-related referrals, maternal cardiac disease, haematological disorders of pregnancy and increasing numbers of morbidly obese mothers. Anaesthetists will also attend fetal medicine clinics, labour ward teaching ward rounds and CTG teaching as well as maternity governance meetings.
About us
St George's Hospital is a tertiary referral centre with over 5,000 deliveries/year. These deliveries include a significant number of pregnant women who present with complex medical disorders, including cardiac disease, neurological disease, and haematological, endocrine or renal disorders, as well as bariatric patients. With all the relevant specialties on site, St George's Hospital offers excellent facilities to care for women with complex medical disorders. The Obstetric Unit comprises both low-risk midwifery and consultant led units, an Obstetric HDU and well regarded Fetal Medicine Unit. We receive South West Thames referrals for high-risk pregnancies, including a specialist center for surgery for morbidly adherent placentas. There are approximately 15 Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetists, with subspecialty expertise in Cardiac Anaesthesia, Education, Simulation, Ethics/Law, Head & Neck anaesthesia and Quality Improvement.
