This is a full-time locum post of 10 PAs, with 9PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) (see job plan template below) and 1PAs for SPA, for personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal and revalidation. There is potential to increase job planned hours to beyond 10PAs, should this be desirable. DCC: Some operating lists are three session lists, for continuity of care and theatre efficiency. The theatre sessions include:

• All major surgical subspecialties for elective and emergency surgery in high-risk patients
• Advanced airway and perioperative medicine
• General Surgery including Upper GI and Colorectal
• Urology including gender re-assignment surgery
• Fixed flexible sessions (alternate Fridays) and annualised flexible sessions (FIY)
• Note: the timetable shown in the detailed advert is subject to change

Good teamwork, enthusiastic attitude and good communication skills are essential for planning elective work and for out of hours work. The 10PA job plans shown below, include flexible annualised sessions in a job planning year (April to April, or pro-rata for start dates at other times). These sessions can be worked flexibly to meet the needs of the individual and the department. Each annualised session can be worked as a morning, an afternoon or an evening session. This flexibility allows individuals to organise working patterns to support a better work life balance, whilst also ensuring there is cover within the department, for gaps created from annual leave and study leave. Cover for the annualised sessions should be spaced out during the year, unless specific arrangements made.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

• Holder of Certificate of completion of training (CCT) training in Anaesthesia or equivalent, within six months of interview and FRCA or equivalent
• Specialist Register: Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), or eligible for registration within six months of interview.
• Current ALS certification
• Current ATLS certification or equivalent

Desirable

• MSc, PhD or similar
• Certification in other Resuscitation courses
• Intensive Care Medicine experience

Experience

Essential

• Evidence of broad experience in all aspects of general anaesthesia and able to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of the patients
• Evidence of special interest in Advanced Airway Management (Fellowship)
• Experience of NHS working practices and systems, (minimum one year working for the NHS)
• Membership of appropriate professional Society (ies)
• Knowledge of the up to date literature

Desirable

• Relevant publications in peer reviewed literature
• Publications in the fields of perioperative medicine and/or Intensive care medicine
• Post graduate research
• Advanced training module/Fellowship in Airway Management

Skills-Clinical

Essential

• Logbook evidence of cases within last 2 years
• Logbook evidence within area of specialist interest

Desirable

• Certificate of focused intensive care ECHO

Skills-Teaching

Essential

• Evidence of formal training in teaching methods
• Evidence of Teaching within specialist area to both Anaesthetic Consultants and Anaesthetic Trainees
• Evidence of Teaching at National Level and/or Regional Level
• Evidence of Teaching at Multi-disciplinary level
• Evidence of delivering teaching to undergraduate students, postgraduate doctors and/or allied healthcare professionals
• Evidence of formal training/completion of courses on patient safety and non-technical skills/ human factors

Desirable

• Qualification: Post-graduate teaching qualification or equivalent
• Teaching in the Simulator setting
• Awards or prizes for presentations delivered

Skills - IT

Essential

• Use of Word, Excel, Power Point and MS Teams (or similar applications)

Desirable

• Designing info graphics, poster presentations

Skills - Leadership and management

Essential

• Completion of appropriate Management /Leadership course (s)
• Previous experience /participation in a management/leadership role

Audit, Quality Improvement Projects (QIP) and service improvement

Essential

• Completion of Audits and/or QIPs within specialist area of interest
• Knowledge and understanding of ACSA (Anaesthetic Clinical Service Accreditation)
• Adapting National Guidelines to departmental level, example RCOA/AAGBI/DAS guidelines

Desirable

• Experience in leading clinical audits, implementing change and monitoring compliance
• Awareness of service development issues

Team Working

Essential

• Ability to work productively in multidisciplinary teams both as team leader and as team member
