Locum Consultant in Neuromuscular and General Neurology (4 PAs) - 12 months fixed term

This is an exciting opportunity for a clinically qualified individual to work within the growing and dynamic neurology department at St George's Hospital.

St George's has a dedicated Neuromuscular Service managing secondary and tertiary care Neuromuscular referrals from South West London and Surrey. The Neuromuscular service has expanded rapidly over the past two years, with sub-specialty services including delivering gene therapy in spinal muscular atrophy, muscle and channelopathies, motor neuron disease clinics and myasthenia gravis. The post-holder will join four Consultants with a specialist interest in Neuromuscular conditions, a clinical genetics CNS, a specialist neuromuscular physiotherapist and two neuromuscular care advisors.

Main duties of the job

  • Leading on the delivery of gene therapies for patients with spinal muscular atrophy
  • Working with the Neuromuscular team to deliver excellent care to our patients including carrying out a weekly motor nerve clinic at St George's, monthly motor nerve clinic in Surrey, contributing to the neuromuscular meetings and complex myasthenia MDT.
  • Contributing to the clinical research programme in neuromuscular disorders including clinical trials in MND.
  • The post holder will contribute to the Neurology ward Attending service on weekdays on a rota basis.
  • The post holder will be on call for the regional neurology service and will conduct a weekend ward round on the Regional Neurology Unit on Saturday and Sunday. Ordinarily this will be one or two weeks a year
  • Contributing to education of undergraduates and postgraduates including clinical supervision of trainees in neurology.

Mentoring is very important in neurology and the post holder will be provided with a senior mentor to support their progress.

About us

The Atkinson Morley Regional Neuroscience Centre provides tertiary neuroscience care to a regional population of 3.5 million in South West London, Surrey and Sussex and district neurology services to the local population (around 1 million). The directorate comprises the departments of neurology, stroke, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation, neurophysiology, neuropsychology and chronic pain. There are close clinical and academic links with neuro-anaesthetics, neuro-intensive care and neuropathology which are themselves based in other directorates.

The clinical services are housed in the purpose-built Atkinson Morley Wing of St George's Hospital, opened in 2003 to accommodate the relocation of neurosciences from the former Atkinson Morley's Hospital in Wimbledon.

The Neurology service includes a regional TBI service for South West London and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit providing specialist stroke services to the population of South West London. Consultant staff includes over 50 neurologists / neurophysiologists / stroke physicians including visiting consultants from other providers, 10 neurosurgeons, 8 neuroradiologists, 3 consultant paediatric neurologists and 3 consultants in rehabilitation medicine. There are 5 consultant neuropsychiatrists based with the directorate.

Timings of individual sessions are provisional and there may be changes as the neurology strategy develops at St. Georges. However, the overall balance of the job will remain broadly unaltered. The post is comprised of approximately 3 DCC sessions and 1 SPA session (dedicated to continuous professional development).

Four weeks a year the post-holder will be the Attending Neurologist, covering the Neurology ward during the week. This will be 10 PA 9 DCC sessions and 1 SPA session.

This timetable is subject to negotiation with the post-holder and may be modified in conjunction with group job planning with the remainder of the Epilepsy and General Neurology teams and according to the particular clinical strengths of the successful candidate.

It is possible that the location of non-acute clinics may need to move to other Trust OPD sites depending on the needs of the service but any such changes will be discussed and agreed with the post-holder (Queen Marys Hospital, Roehampton; The Nelson Hospital, Wimbledon; St Johns Hospital, Battersea).

On call duties

The post holder will also join the neurology on call rota. This involves covering 1 week 2 times a year. This involves 1 PAs of work on each weekend day - carrying out a ward round of neurology inpatients and reviewing ward referrals on non-neurology wards. Time off in lieu will be considered for weekend working.

Research

The successful post-holder would be expected to be enthusiastic about developing a research interest, and undertake/update GCP training to support clinical trials (at least as a sub-investigator). There is an already active neuromuscular research portfolio, with very close links with SGUL. Opportunities exist for developing research studies and becoming a local principal investigator of future studies. There are excellent opportunities for involvement in specific research projects according to the interests of the post holder.

Qualifications and Training

It is a requirement of the post that the successful candidate has:

  • GMC registration
  • CCST or CCT and/or entry on to the Specialist Register in neurology
  • Registration with a Medical Defence Organisation for insurance and indemnity

Clinical postgraduate training

The appointed individual will be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the Unit and the joint Campus through participation in relevant clinical and research meetings and in the Institutional Grand Rounds (currently Thursday 12:45 2:00 organised by the Dean for Clinical Affairs).

Postgraduate Teaching

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of junior medical staff in Neurosciences and take an active role within the SpR training programme for trainees in Neurology and be a clinical supervisor to junior medical staff. This will take place across DCC and SPA time and outpatient clinic templates are adjusted to take into consideration teaching aspects of the clinics. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to postgraduate teaching of (e.g.) physiotherapists and specialist nurses with staff of the Faculty of Healthcare & Social Care Sciences.

Undergraduate Teaching

The post holder will be expected to contribute to MB BS teaching, clinically within their service and generically through School courses. They may also participate in examining or in other contributions following discussion with the Dean of Undergraduate Medicine or his nominee. The appointed individual may also be expected (by negotiation as appropriate) to contribute to the teaching of Midwifery, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiography or Social Work students in the Faculty of Healthcare Sciences.

Management

The successful candidate will be expected to work with professional colleagues and local managers in the efficient running of the Service, and will share with Consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

Governance / Audit

The post-holder is expected to fully participate in the departments governance, and contribute to this under the Governance Lead for Neurology and Stroke. He / she will also be expected participate in audit and present an audit at least annually at the departmental audit programme.

CPD

The department has an active CPD programme including monthly academic seminars, a weekly half-day grand round / literature review, audit programme and journal club, among many other CPD opportunities. The post-holder is expected to fully engage with this and maintain their CME/CPD, including the requirements for external CPD.
