It is currently composed of the upper gastrointestinal surgical team and the colorectal surgical team; both teams contribute to care of emergency patients. It is planned to create an Emergency General Surgical team which will be devoted to the care of emergency general surgical patients; this will form a subgroup within the General Surgery Department. The Emergency General Surgery firm will have its own junior clinical team and it is anticipated that 5 consultants will work together to oversee provision of emergency care.
