Job summary

This post has been created to join the General Surgery team at St. George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post has been developed to provide delivery of clinical care for upper gastrointestinal, general, and emergency surgical patients. Experience in bariatric surgery is preferable to help provide bariatric surgery at St. George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to:

  • To take an active part, in co-operation with colleagues, in the development of emergency general surgery.
  • To take an active part, in co-operation with colleagues, in the provision of bariatric surgery.
  • Support the introduction of a Same Day Emergency Care service.
  • To take an active part in the management and administration of the Upper GI service.
  • To take an active part in the management and administration of trauma surgery.
  • To take a leading role in clinical governance within the department.
  • To take a leading role in the tuition of medical students from St George's University of London.
  • An interest in research would be strongly supported.

About us

The General Surgery Department provides care for elective and emergency patients presenting with surgical gastrointestinal conditions. It is currently composed of the upper gastrointestinal surgical team and the colorectal surgical team; both teams contribute to care of emergency patients. It is planned to create an Emergency General Surgical team which will be devoted to the care of emergency general surgical patients; this will form a subgroup within the General Surgery Department. The Emergency General Surgery firm will have its own junior clinical team and it is anticipated that 5 consultants will work together to oversee provision of emergency care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher 'General Surgery' surgical qualification e.g. FRCS(Gen) or equivalent

Desirable

  • oJAG accreditation in upper GI endoscopy
  • oHigher degree (MD, PhD, etc)
  • oPost CCT fellowship

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • oExperience and training in General and Emergency surgery
  • oAbility to manage a range of emergency and elective general surgical conditions
  • Training in advanced laparoscopic surgery
  • NHS experience
