Job summary
Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow post to start in August 2023 or February 2024. All posts are for an initial 6-month contract, however following review can be extended to 12 months.
Our centralised preoperative assessment centre has a team of Nurses and anaesthetist reviewing around 900 patients per month. We are working closely with the general practitioners from our 6 CCGs to enhance the smooth transition of care from primary to tertiary care. We have a "POA steering working group" which is effectively working around various perioperative projects, including Perioperative "Big Rooms", Pre-habilitation project "Get Set 4 Surgery" and Pre-op Diabetes optimisation - IP3Dproject.
Main duties of the job
Learning outcomes:
- To deliver high qualitypreoperativeassessment, investigation and management of ASA 1-4 patients for elective and emergency surgery
- To deliver high quality individualised anaesthetic care to ASA 1-3 [E] patients, focusing on optimising patient experience and outcome
- To plan and implement high quality individualised post-operative care for ASA 1-3 [E] patients
Clinical Opportunities:
- Preoperative assessment
- Candidate would be able to join High risk anaesthetic clinic with experience of face to face assessment, risk stratification ( ACS-NSQIP, OS-MRS to discuss and facilitating perioperative planning).
- Notes review and POA nursing queries enabling to understand common clinical dilemmas.
- Understanding importance of timely identification and optimisation of patients with Anaemia, diabetes, Malnutrition and Frailty.
- Effectively interpreting preoperative investigations like Spirometry/ Lung function tests, Sleep studies, METs-DASI scoring, Normal and Stress ECHOs for risk stratification and optimisation of patients with complex comorbidities.
- Pre-habilitation Services
- Able to get involved in weekly Surgery school sessions ( Every Thursday for 2.5Hrs) educating patients on nutrition, physical activity, life style modulation advice and orientation around perioperative expectation.
- Identifying and optimising "At risk Frail and Elderly patient" to improve perioperative outcome

- Will get an opportunity to attend weekly Bariatric, Renal, Upper and Lower GI MDTs according to your interest.
- Undertaking elective and emergency theatre work
- Planning and delivering anaesthesia for complex Bariatric/ Upper GI, Lower GI, Breast, Gynaecology, Renal, breast and plastic surgeries.
- Proficient in using of video-laryngoscopy, high flow nasal oxygen, total intravenous anaesthesia, cardiac output monitoring and BIS monitoring.
- Part of the On-Call Rota with opportunity to manage ASA 1-4 patient with case mix of difficult airway, post bariatric surgery complications etc.
- Opportunity to practice awake Fibreoptic intubation, regional blocks.
