Job summary

The post holder will be a member of CHSIST. We are a diverse team working innovatively within a think family agenda to include expertise in Adult, Children, (including Children Looked After) and Maternity Safeguarding. We are a large team with a range of expertise across safeguarding offering an exciting opportunity to join us as a specialist safeguarding advisor.

The post holder will be a highly visible senior midwife and as such expected to provide support, knowledge, advice and clinical expertise to all staff in maternity services in all areas of safeguarding including children, young people and adults of concern.

To work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team and partner agencies to ensure that pregnant women and their babies who come into contact with services Croydon University Hospital and Croydon Health Services are safeguarded and that their welfare is promoted.

Main duties of the job

Professional / Clinical

To ensure that the Trust's systems and procedures for safeguarding pregnant women and their babies are regularly monitored, evaluated and reviewed to minimise risk in the antenatal period.

Work closely with all the members of CHIST including named professionals and designated professionals and relevant partner agencies.

To provide expert professional advice and support regarding safeguarding children to clinical staff and other front line staff within maternity services. This will also include issues relating to adult safeguarding and domestic violence.

To ensure staff support and advice is readily available and that there is clear guidance as to whom to contact for out of hours.

Professional / Clinical

1. Provide a full range of Health Education and social care advice to vulnerable women in all maternity settings.

2. Assess the full range of care needs and develops, implements and evaluates Programmes of care in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period for young women and their babies.

3. Liaise regularly and effectively with teams supporting vulnerable pregnant women and families including Childrens Social care.

4. Attend all relevant case conferences, professionals and core group meetings and update the maternity system with relevant plans of care for the young person concerned.

5. To provide support and advice to staff working with vulnerable pregnant women and families where there is an escalation in concern regarding safeguarding issues.

6. Attend Board meetings relevant to Safeguarding and Perinatal Mental health

7. Work as part of the Maternity Safeguarding Team and support the team in safeguarding duties where required, for example covering specialist ante natal clinics when needed.

8. Act as a mentor for less experienced midwives and other staff / students providing leadership within the practice environment.

9. Provide midwives with regular safeguarding supervision.

10. Work autonomously within guidelines and sphere of professional practice.

11. Promote commitment to the Trust whilst working towards the five promises.

12. Be a part of the team who run clinics providing care to women with perinatal mental health concerns and alcohol and drug misuse.

Regstered Midwife/ Degree qualification

Essential

  • Registered Midwife / Degree qualification
  • Evidence of continuing CPD Teaching qualification.

Desirable

  • Master's degree or working towards
  • Qualification in Management /Leadership Safeguarding qualification

  • Substantial experience of working in maternity safeguarding across acute and community areas
  • Substantial experience of working with vulnerable women with complex medical and social needs including domestic abuse and sexual violence, FGM and other forms of harmful practice, mental health concerns and substance misuse/abuse
