Job summary

The post holder has responsibility for the provision of competent professional nursing care and specialist practice in Dermatology, to meet with individual needs of the designated patient population.

The post holder will be accountable for the delivery of such care to a specific group of patients, and take charge of the ward / department on a regular basis.

The post holder will be encouraged to organise own time and that of junior staff, delegating to junior staff and learners, and participating in teaching and education programmes for staff and patients.

The post holder should be competent at carrying out consultations face to face or remotely via video or telephone technology. Additionally the post holder will be competent at independently carrying out minor skin biopsies and the use of a PGD to use local anaesthetic during these procedures. The nurse could also be skilled in other aspects of specialist dermatology treatment i.e. acne treatment and phototherapy.

Main duties of the job

Strive to maintain the highest standard of patient care at all times by using the nursing process to assess patient' individual needs, plan care within the overall framework of nursing, implementation and evaluate nursing care and act on the outcomes without requiring supervision.

Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. This includes history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations. Specialist's skills or a combination of these skills in: 2week wait Skin Cancer Pathway clinic, Tele dermatology, Mole Mapping, Phototherapy.

Utilising the appropriate assessment tools e.g. Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) & Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) to measure the impact/ severity of their skin condition.

Works alongside medical and senior nursing colleagues, to use the PGD for local anaesthesia safely and effective in the prep of skin biopsies for patients.

Essential

  • oRegistered General Nurse/ Degree in Nursing or working towards oPostgraduate diploma dermatology in clinical practice oIn-house training - Phototherapy (practical) Iontophoresis, systemic monitoring (shadowing) oTele-dermatology patient assessment and photographing
  • Mentorship module or equivalent
  • Advanced dermatology knowledge and competencies gained from HEE courses or in-house training
  • In-house training- Phototherapy, Iontophoresis, systemic monitoring
  • Tele-dermatology patient assessment and photographing

Desirable

  • oMasters level studies or working towards oSelf-directed learnings
  • Carrying a caseload, responsible for the management of complex cases and maintaining accurate clinical records ( phototherapy and acne)
  • Self-directed learnings

Skills and Abilities

  • oAbility to work independently in the treatment and management of patients for Phototherapy (UVA &UVB)
  • oAbility to undertake minor skin surgery e.g mole mapping & punch biopsy
  • oEvidence of involvement in Clinic Audits e.g. WHO checklist.
  • oEvidence of sign off competency to run Tele-dermatology clinic independently
  • oIn-depth specialist experience in assessing, developing and implementing nursing care programmes/ clinic in an Out-patient setting.

  • oRotas management experience
  • oActive participant in quality improvement projects e.g. Tele-dermatology clinic, Minor skin surgery and Acne clinic.
  • oSystemic/biologic nurse liaison oMonitoring acne patients on Isotretinoin.
