Main duties of the job
The Gastroenterology Department is staffed by 5 full time Consultants, 2 Associate Specialists,
The Gastroenterology department works closely alongside the Endoscopy Unit at Croydon University Hospital, which has an excellent nursing workforce and is proud to be JAG accredited. The Endoscopy Unit has 4 procedure rooms, with ERCP and other interventional work undertaken in the nearby X-ray department. The department is leading in the region with Endoscopic Submuscoal Dissection/Resection.
An Endoscopic ultrasound service is provided once a week for Croydon patients at St George's Hospital by a CHS Gastroenterology consultant, with long-term plans to repatriate this activity to our Endoscopy Unit.
There are 3 advanced therapeutic endoscopy lists a week in radiology, in which balloon dilatations, stents, feeding tubes and ERCPs are delivered. The Endoscopy Unit also undertakes double balloon endoscopy with an anaesthetist in attendance.
Planned service improvements include the introduction of Oesophageal pH monitoring/manometry and Endoscopic Ultrasound to be done locally.
Gastroenterology outpatient clinics (General Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hepatology) are held on the main Croydon University Hospital site and Purley War Memorial Hospital, serving North and South Croydon patients, respectively.
