Band 7 Colorectal Triage Nurse fixed term 6 months ideal for a secondment

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a keen and motivated individual to become a Band 7 colorectal CNS to maintain the Colorectal USC pathway. The role will ensure the seamless support of the Colorectal patient from referral by GP services to the investigation result and treatment of the patient. The post is a Band 7 full time position, covering the service Monday to Friday 9 to 5, and 8 to 4.

We provide cancer diagnostic pathways, and surgical treatments for colorectal, gynaecology, breast and urological cancers. We are looking for an enthusiastic nurse to join our friendly and supportive Macmillan Cancer Nursing and Support Team to provide high quality care for patients referred to our two week wait colorectal pathway. The post holder will work with the Macmillan Colorectal Nurse Consultant, Triage Clinical nurse specialists, Cancer Nurse specialists, Colorectal surgeons and Gastroenterologists, and the multiprofessional team to provide a straight to test two week pathway and the clinical reviews post diagnostics. To help deliver the cancer waiting times targets.

Main duties of the job

  • To deliver evidence based, clinical diagnostic protocols, including "straight to test".
  • To use highly advanced communication skills in supporting patients throughout the diagnostic pathway; using advanced clinical assessment skills to ensure all relevant clinical information is available to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To use specialist nursing knowledge to review and interpret all clinical investigatory results and determine next pathway stage; including discharge and referral back to GP, or referral to specialist services as required.
  • To demonstrate a higher level of practice through the provision of specialist nursing knowledge and expertise in the delivery of diagnostic pathways, including LGI suspected cancer.
  • To establish and maintain robust communication channels with professional colleagues across a range of services, including primary, secondary and tertiary care.
  • To be self-directing and work autonomously, identifying and maintaining supportive networks; but escalating as appropriate for supervision of complex caseloads.
  • To have responsibility for management for junior nurse colleagues working within the TAS, adhering to Trust HR processes and staff development; and allocation of duties within the nursing team.
  • To support the Trust in achieving compliance with Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) and Referral to Treatment (RTT) waiting time targets.

  • First level degree in related subject

  • Advanced Communication Skills training certificate

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of colorectal cancer pathways including 2ww and 18ww routes
  • Knowledge and understanding of colorectal cancer symptoms and colorectal diseases / pathology.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of diagnostic pathways for suspected Colorectal Cancer

  • Knowledge of MDT working
  • Knowledge of treatment modalities for GI Cancers.
