Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic nurse to join our Macmillan Colorectal Nursing team to provide high quality care for our busy colorectal cancer service. The post holder will join a friendly and well established team including a Nurse Consultant, Clinical nurse specialist, Enhanced Recovery CNS and two Macmillan Patient Support Officer's and well as a Nurse led Triage assessment team. We have five Consultant surgeons who perform Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer and minimally invasive surgery for early rectal cancers as well as providing diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopies. Our Colorectal service provides nurse led rapid diagnostic 2 week wait and treatment pathways for colorectal cancers, in partnership with our local cancer centre, the Royal Marsden hospital. We work closely with Royal Marsden Partners and Macmillan to deliver a bespoke, patient centred nurse led colorectal cancer service for our patients including stratified follow up, holistic needs assessments and personalised care. We are also fortunate to be part of a well-established wider Macmillan Cancer Nursing team within the trust.

Main duties of the job

The Macmillan Colorectal Cancer CNS will provide expert evidence based advice and clinical expertise throughout the Trust, working collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of Colorectal Cancer patients.

  • To deliver evidence based, clinical diagnostic protocols, including "straight to test".
  • To use highly advanced communication skills in supporting patients throughout the diagnostic pathway; using advanced clinical assessment skills to ensure all relevant clinical information is available to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To use specialist nursing knowledge to review and interpret all clinical investigatory results and determine next pathway stage; including discharge and referral back to GP, or referral to specialist services as required.
  • To demonstrate a higher level of practice through the provision of specialist nursing knowledge and expertise in the delivery of diagnostic and follow uppathways , including LGI suspected cancer.
  • To have responsibility for management for junior nurse colleagues working within the TAS, adhering to Trust HR processes and staff development; and allocation of duties within the nursing team.
  • To support the Trust in achieving compliance with Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) and Referral to Treatment (RTT) waiting time targets.
